Rising Junior in California Looking for Alternatives to CC with Transfer

@theloniusmonk she could commute to UCB. Wouldn’t likely get in as a Freshman but could consider trying to transfer there with a TAG to one of the other UC campuses as a back up if she didn’t get in.

@aquapt I absolutely get that she may not end up going to law school. And that would be OK.

We would not have paid for 4 years at a UC school for my oldest. We just can’t afford it without loans. We did tell him he could do a Cal State school for 4 years (he did apply to 3 as a Freshman and was accepted). But he chose to go the cc route.

Thanks for the other school suggestions.

Berkeley does not do TAG

Here are some sample costs of attendance to help other posters get an idea of what kind of cost levels are involved. Boldfaced costs are what the OP could have to consider, based on commutability only to CSU East Bay and a community college (assumed Chabot College, which is closest to CSU East Bay).

School Tuition and fees only (CA resident) With parents On-campus Off-campus Link
Chabot College (community college) $1,403 $18,766 (estimate, see below) Costs - Chabot College
CSU East Bay $6,995 $24,358 $27,959 $31,278 Estimated Cost of Attendance
CSU Chico $7,972 $19,790 $26,728 $24,754 Cost of Attendance – Financial Aid & Scholarship Office – Chico State
Cal Poly Humboldt $7,858 $24,850 Costs | Cal Poly Humboldt
UC Davis $15,274 $30,341 $39,241 $33,887 Cost
Northern Arizona University (WUE) $15,585 $32,461 Apply to NAU from California | WUE | Admission
University of Arizona $39,600 $58,050 $55,500 Cost: Incoming First-Year and Transfer | Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid
University of Arizona (4.0 GPA) $4,600 $23,050 $20,500 Types of Aid: Incoming First-Year and Transfer Tuition Scholarship Awards | Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid
University of Arizona (3.9 GPA) $9,600 $28,050 $25,500 Types of Aid: Incoming First-Year and Transfer Tuition Scholarship Awards | Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid
University of Arizona (3.75 GPA) $19,600 $38,050 $35,500 Types of Aid: Incoming First-Year and Transfer Tuition Scholarship Awards | Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid
University of Arizona (3.5 GPA) $27,100 $45,550 $43,000 Types of Aid: Incoming First-Year and Transfer Tuition Scholarship Awards | Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid
University of Nevada, Reno (3.25 GPA or 24 ACT or 1160 SAT for WUE) $11,520 $24,198 Out-of-State Student Tuition, Fees and Estimated Expenses | University Costs | University of Nevada, Reno and Western Undergraduate Exchange | Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships | University of Nevada, Reno
University of New Mexico (3.0 GPA or 20 ACT or 1030 SAT for in-state tuition) $10,860 $27,471 Cost of Attendance :: Office of Admissions | The University of New Mexico

Chabot College does not list full cost of attendance numbers, so I estimated the “with parents” cost by using the CSU East Bay “with parents” cost, but replacing the tuition amount.

@Johnsy i do know that which is why I said she would TAG one of the other UC campuses that does offer TAG for her major.

@ucbalumnus thanks for the info! Our local cc is actually Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill (we live in Concord). It is free for 2 years with their first time, full time promise (that’s what my oldest son did).

If you live in Concord, then UCB is closer than CSUEB for commuting purposes (unless you mean one of the smaller CSUEB satellite campuses). The hard part is getting in. So is CSU Maritime Academy, but it probably does not have the desired majors.

School Tuition and fees only (CA resident) With parents On-campus Off-campus Link
Diablo Valley College (FT3) $0 $12,144 (estimated) FT3 Tuition Free Community College
UC Berkeley $14,760 $30,872 $43,554 $38,846 https://financialaid.berkeley.edu/how-aid-works/student-budgets-cost-of-attendance/
UC Berkeley (student health insurance plan waived) $14,760 $26,904 $39,586 $34,878 https://financialaid.berkeley.edu/how-aid-works/student-budgets-cost-of-attendance/

Diablo Valley College “with parents” costs estimated from UC Berkeley “with parents” costs, but removing tuition and student health insurance plan.

Ok got it, then you may want to consider SJSU as well if you’re considering Chico and Humboldt, unless you didn’t think it was a good fit for your daughter. I’m assuming you can afford the four years there of course. However, I still think the CC to UCB path may be the best path for a social science major.
