Rising junior MechE: Is it unusual to not have an internship this summer?

I am just a little concerned about my prospects for the future because my GPA is a 2.9 and am once again working for my local restaurant or something this summer instead of having a real engineering internship like some of my meche friends do. Do most umich mechanical engineers have internships going into their junior year?

Hard to say most or not. Many will, many won’t. Don’t worry too much about it, but make sure you find something next semester.

I’d say waiting tables at a restaurant would be your last resort.

There are plenty of other things to do besides that. You could do research for a professor, some type of non-engineering internship (better if business oriented), teach abroad, or summer classes in AA.
