Rising Sr & has no formal dance training...pls advice what to do from now to MT Auditions...thanks!

Hi All - My D discovered MT later than most. She is now working with a private vocal coach but has no formal dance training. What would you advise that she can do in the short amount of time (from now until audition time in few months)? Also, any advice on where to get affordable dance wear online is greatly appreciated

Thanks so much in advance!

I would:
take some private ballet and jazz lessons to learn basic dance terminology (it would be tough to learn tap at this late date and usually not necessary for most dance calls)
practice learning different combinations quickly. Learn a different combo every day. It doesn’t matter what it is. What you are practicing is learning a set of steps quickly.
Work on your posture and flexibility by stretching/doing yoga. (This is something you can do on your own at home. If you need guidance, there are lots of videos on you tube you can follow along with for at home stretching. )

Remember: For most schools, the big key in dance calls is not necessarily how much technique you have but how you present yourself - especially if you get lost in the steps. They will teach technique once you are in their program. They are looking for potential. Practice keeping positive, keeping great facial expressions and enthusiasm even if you miss a step. Your positive attitude will go a long way in a dance call.

I agree with vvnstar’s advice, as much ballet as you can get and jazz if you can swing both. I have a S who is over 6 feet tall, but we always have pretty good luck finding dance wear at “discount dance”. They seem to have the widest selection and a range of prices for most of the common items.

Yes Discount dance is good for clothes and shoes

Building a little on the post from @vvnstar, many dance calls use basic ballet terminology, so becoming familiar with some ballet fundamentals will help a lot. If worse comes to worse, find some ballet videos on Amazon (and/or youtube) and have your d review those until she has some grasp of the most basic ballet elements. Of course, a class or private instruction would be worlds better. The same holds for jazz, videos can help your d learn the basic terms, elements, and combinations fairly quickly (but a class is necessary to build the correct posture and technique). At most dance calls, the jazz terminology comes fast and furious for those not familiar with the lexicon.

My son had no dance training–he’d just been in a lot of shows and picked things up quickly. A local dance teacher (he knew her from all the community theater shows she’d choreographed) actually had designed a 6-week summer crash course for beginners to prep for college auditions. She had a list of terms he should memorize and gave him lots of info. She taught him in short private lessons and he practiced hard all week. This was enough for him not to feel foolish or uncomfortable in the auditions.

Advice I wish I’d taken: No amount of dance training you try to cram in between now and your auditions will turn your kid into Misty Copeland or Savion Glover. Focus on ballet and don’t try to bend the time-space continuum to cram more into an already crazy season! <3
