Turns our my daughter doesn’t want to apply for it–sigh. At first glance it seemed like you just have to answer the questions and show your audition tape or example or whatever but upon further reading there are some commitments she didn’t want to lock herself into related to performing arts while at the school and she wasn’t sure how intense that would be while trying to adjust to school. It didn’t seem like much to me, but you know kids these days lol
Well, it’s only a small amount of money, and it seems like there are a ton of other clubs and activities if performing arts are not a big draw for your kid.
Mine, on the other hand, would be going mostly for the performing arts – and if she has to go to classes and actually study, well, fine. ![]()
(I’m kidding but there’s a half truth in there, lol!)
One of the first things that drew D26 to RIT was the ArtEx program.
That is what got her to deep dive into this school and then she found so many other awesome things!!
Signed up for the info session on that for early next month.
Sounds so cool and perfect for her!!
Even at the recent open house- she had more questions about the darkrooms- glass blowing- ceramics… than she did for her prospective major
.
When she saw the textile room in the SHED- she nearly died!
I don’t think we saw the textile room specifically – OMG. Mine would be all about that, too! She loves to sew. We also geeked out over the “glass box theatre.”
Unfortunately, if my D26 is admitted to the New Media Design major that she applied to, she can’t do ArtEx – because it’s not open to students already in the college of Art and Design.
But I’m sure she’d find clubs and opportunities to be creative regardless, lol.
If anyone interested in RIT is going to be in NYC, go take a picture in front of their billboard and send it in to get a prize pack. ![]()
Just found this forum when I was trying to find out whether any ED notices have gone out yet. I’m pretty sure some have. D26 is a basketball recruit—she applied ED for the 5-year PA program as first choice, bio sciences as second. The PA program seems to be highly competitive so it could be a stretch, although according the requirements listed, it seems like she’s a good candidate. We had indication last summer that she would likely be admitted – and a generous potential merit award that I was not expecting—but it’s still kind of nerve-wracking! We’re way South and I had never heard of RIT but I absolutely loved it when we visited. D26 wants to be a true student athlete (hence Division 3 athletics vs. Division 2) and she is also a violinist. The women’s bball program appears to be on the rise and Coach had her come for an official visit a few months back with an offer—really made her feel good. Looking forward to hopefully joining the admitted parents’ group.
Fingers crossed for your D26! I love the combo of basketball and violin – she sounds like a great kid. Mine is a clarinetist, but she doesn’t have an athletic bone in her body, sadly – not for lack of trying because she hit 6 feet in height at age 11 or 12, but alas. ![]()
I’ve seen a few ED acceptances on Reddit, and also a few EA – but those all seem to be international students.
We’re also in the South and loved RIT when we visited! But did you guys go in the winter? ![]()
D26 just got her ED1 acceptance into the Computer Engineering program.
She had originally applied EA- but after the open house visit- she switched it to ED.
So excited!!! Can’t wait until she comes home today from school so we can celebrate!
So did she get the email at school and text you? How did it all go down? ![]()
Dad, I and D26 all received an email saying ‘congrats - you’re in’.
We saw it before she did- but waited for her to ‘let us know’ before we started congratulating her! Little sad we did not get to see her response
but in the grand scheme of things- not that big of a deal.
I do not think that is the usual way to get notified- it came from RIT/NTID so that maybe why we all got it instead of D26 just getting a notice to check her portal for an update.
Also- I am not seeing others talking about acceptances on other sites- so the NTID aspect may have come into play on the timing also
.
Good luck! My kid is a STEM kid but both my husband and I are former actors. We consider him a triumph over genetics ![]()
. I deeply appreciate how RIT sees the power of and values the arts and a well- rounded education. It’s a really special place. It’s high on our list but a bit too suburban for him. We’re in Manhattan (he’s a lifer here) and he really wants something for urban and less car dependent. RIT is also outstanding with neurodiverse kids (mine is autistic). So much to love about this school. Sending lots of “big acceptance energy” everyone’s way!
No! we went spring and mid-summer. It was hot. But we could tell it gets cold there!
D26 thought this was hilarious.
Shovels and salt buckets at almost every entrance.
She understands what this implies but I am not sure she ‘truly’ understands!!
When you have underground tunnels and shovels stationed everywhere - it is for a reason.
We get lots of snow here- but Colorado snow and NY snow is different.
This is how it looked when we went in February. My kid, who can count on one hand the number of times she’s seen snow, could not stop looking at it, LOL.
Having grown up outside of Syracuse (which statistically gets more snow than Rochester), I can say it is very cold and can be really snowy. The past several years have seen much less snow overall and winters have been milder. BUT the cold snaps are brutal.
we live in NYC (and have since the early ‘90s) and it can be jarring for me. More than the snow and cold, it can be very gray for many months of the year, which can take a mental toll.
All of that said, Central and Western NY are lovely places with a lot to offer. Now that Micron is building their huge plant in Clay (a Syracuse suburb), it’s only going to get better. Bonus: that area is also more desirable in the face of climate change.
Lurker to this thread. My kid is in their first year at RIT (so hasn’t been a full winter). They haven’t had all that much snow yet. It is cold, but nothing all that shocking as a New Englander. Rochester gets a fair bit less snow than Buffalo, which is what we always get on the news here and what I was picturing before they signed on to RIT:) One thing to note is that it is statistically pretty gray - not much sun. I dug into some stats at one point, and that is something that stuck out a fair bit. I am sending the kid back with a sun lamp in jan..though I doubt they will use it. ha.
My husband went to Syracuse for undergrad (and is a New Englander), so he isn’t fazed by the amount of snow in Rochester, lol.
I, however, grew up in south Florida and went to U. Florida for undergrad. We met in an internship after junior year, and I visited him at Syracuse for a long weekend during senior year – and it was perfectly sunny and beautiful and 70 degrees out. He was like, do NOT be fooled.
It snowed on graduation for the class after his!
We both moved to NYC after graduating and lived there for six years, getting married halfway through. I don’t remember the winter bothering me while we were there – and snow was actually super fun in the city because I didn’t have to drive in it, lol, and it was still just such a novelty for me. I remember a giant storm in maybe January 1996 – I think, or maybe the following year? – when all the bridges and tunnels were closed, so we went out and ice skated at Rockefeller, and it was perfectly empty and blissful. Imagine!
I’m impatiently waiting for RIT decisions to be released so D26 can have all her options in front of her and then make her choice!
If mine lands at RIT, I am absolutely doing this!
My college roommate was from a sunny state (I went to college in a very not sunny spot) and I think it helped them! I had never seen one before back then.
Yes!!! It was January 1996. I was still an actor at the time and left for a touring gig the day before that whopper!
