RIT Early Action / Early Decision Class of 2030 Official Thread

I felt like it was not as vibrant and happening but that could be because we compared it to Syracuse which is totally different. The campus seemed a bit secluded with not much to do right outside but I have read that Henrietta has many thing to do, so I could be completely wrong here. Also read on reddit that its a slightly Nerdy campus. My daughter loved RIT and the Head of NMD gave us a personal tour of facilities and his future plans. He loved my daughter’s portfolio and asked relevant questions although portfolio is not required for New Media Design. My daughter has applied to Pratt, Parsons, SCAD, WPI, Umass, RPI and Rutgers too. she is very keen on design. she plays Viola and has vocal training. Also runs a 2D animation club is passionate about animation. and yeah, she loves crochet, puzzle while watching youtube videos..so many similarities..!!

Which other Undergraduate programs has your daughter applied to?

Which university did your older daughter went to? so sorry for many questions here, but I felt like you were describing my daughter when you wrote about your daughter.. just a stressed mom here.

That’s great that you got such a personalized tour! Our girls do sound similar. Mine did not want to apply to any art schools because marching or pep band is important to her, and she wanted a more traditional undergrad experience. The game symphony orchestra at RIT is a big draw.

She also applied to Miami Ohio (emerging tech/games & simulation), Pitt (digital narrative and interactive design), Georgia Tech (arts, entertainment and creative technologies), UT Dallas (media arts and design), WPI (interactive media and game development), and Davidson (film, media and digital studies).

Of those, she’s been accepted to the first four. She’s no longer really interested in WPI, and Davidson is an outlier that she applied to mostly because her school nominated her for their full-ride scholarship (but she’s not really interested). We’re waiting to hear from RIT, and then we’ll visit Georgia Tech (again) and Pitt, and possibly RIT (again) if she gets in. Then she’ll need to decide.

I agree on the nerdy campus, lol, but this is a good thing for my kid. I also agree that I wish there were some walkable shopping/restaurants/life near the school. The urban campus of Pitt is appealing for this reason, although we haven’t visited yet. It’s also the least artsy of the majors – she’d have to add an art minor or something.

My older daughter is at Rice University. It was a great fit for her, but it wouldn’t be right for my younger one.

RPI has a great program, as an alum and a parent of a first year student… the school has a good sense of community and walkable to a downtown.

yess. RIT is on of the list for my daughter.. And we also feel its will give her the university experience and let her take a couple of minors of her liking. plus their co- op program is really good too, although co-op is not a requirement for graduation for NMD undergrads. Thank you for mentioning the Orchestra program, we will look into it.

We got very good scholarships from SCAD, Parsons and Pratt so far, also Drexel.

Thank you so much for describing all the Undergrad majors along with the University names. That was so helpful, because my daughter also applied to Gtech (Computational Media). but the new major that you mentioned is so interesting and my daughter liked it a lot. Although, we are out of state for Gtech, so our chances of acceptance and sending her are low. we are in Massachusetts. so NYC, and even RIT is drivable.

We loved RPI so much! but their digital media program is not at par with RIT.

Thank you so much for your reply. Totally agree on RPI. All of us loved the RPI campus and professors that we met. Wish their digital media program was slightly more attractive. Then I would have sent her there. Its only 2 hours drive away for us and they offered a very attractive scholarship.

Yes, I think location is important. That’s partially why mine is no longer interested in WPI – she would have to fly into Boston and take a train/bus or into Hartford or Providence and then Uber? She could also fly through LaGuardia and transfer to a flight to the small Worcester airport. (But additionally, she didn’t love the unusual short quarters at WPI.)

Did your daughter get a good feel for the program at WPI? We did like the campus a lot more than we expected.

RIT, however, is a direct flight for us and such a short and easy Uber from the airport.

We’re in-state for Georgia Tech, which helped a lot in admission and logistics, of course. We looked at the computational media program for awhile, but it was too coding-heavy for my daughter. (Also tougher to get into, as CS is so competitive at Tech.) She was considering applying for just Literature, Media & Communication (which is the half of the computational media major that is not CS) – and then we saw the announcement of the new major, which seemed perfect.

And yes, SAME on RPI – we looked closely at the digital media program, but none of the tracks included exactly what she wanted. She really wants an interdisciplinary major that is a combo of art and tech, and RPI seemed to limit to one or the other. Which is too bad, because we know a freshman there this semester who is having a fantastic experience.

Unless she falls in love with Pitt and the whole urban experience, I suspect her decision will come down to Georgia Tech and RIT (if she gets in). The fact that co-ops are highly suggested but not mandatory for NMD is a big plus, as there’s no pressure.

I honestly think it might come down to marching band vs. pep band, lol.

We live very close to the WPI campus and my husband loved the campus. unfortunately I couldn’t visit with them since I was travelling. A lot of our friends kids go there and we have stellar review from them. only drawback is less art heavy and more tech heavy. Otherwise WPI, RPI would have been so great if they had more art and design focused programs. Thank you so much for pointing out the Gtech new undergrad. we will see if its possible to switch to it (if at all we get in being Out of state).

I looked at the U Pitt undergrad that was in your previous comment. It seems very interesting but my daughter was concerned about too many English subjects and slightly less design compared to RIT. But it seems to be a good inter disciplinary program over all.

Is there a way to chat on a DM or off the thread on this platform?

Yes! I’ll send you a DM. You’ll see it pop up as a green envelope on the upper right side of your screen if you’re using a laptop.

Just adding to the thread to keep us shuffling along! Anyone with fun new acceptance news to share? We’re still awaiting my daughters financial aid package–we desperately want to click the “I accept” button but it would be silly to do so without seeing the full offer picture, I suppose  hopefully that comes soon-I’ve gotten conflicting info. Someone from NTID told us we’d get it shortly after the holiday break and to contact financial aid if not by the 15th but the financial aid office told us that since she’s Early Action, she won’t hear until March. I am terrible at being patient

D26 got her notice for the acceptance into her programs accelerated BS/MS program/track.
She is very interested in this option, so she was very happy that she got this now instead of having to worry about applying later for it.

Hopefully y’all get it soon!!! That would be phycological torture :upside_down_face: to have to wait until March for that information when the acceptance is already in hand.

I have not seen much banter on any site in regard to ED2- so wondering if it is a really small group this year or if they just have not started releasing those yet.
(ED1 was released slowly over a month-long time period!!)
But ED2 should be out soon (by mid Jan)
After that the EA decisions!!! (most on here seem to be in that group- good luck all!)

Just a timeline in case it is helpful for those waiting for certain items to come through (no idea if this holds for all acceptances or just ED1 :person_shrugging: but at least a possible data point for those that like keeping track of possibilities on timelines  )

-Decision on Dec 5th
Also received merit scholarship info on that day
-Financial Aid packet on Dec 18th
So about ~2 weeks (had filled FAFSA out by Nov 1st)
-Notice of acceptance into the accelerated BS/MS Dec 17th
(not all programs have this)

Still waiting to hear about acceptance into the ArtEx program she applied for- not sure the timeline for that.

Congrats! That’s wonderful news!!! We were Early Action but got a very early decision on December 19th–the only merit that came along with it was the alumni nomination scholarship–I guess the rest will be in the official aid packet-crossing fingers it’s generous  Our FAFSA was in on like September 29th when they randomly released it early!

I’m thinking/hoping she will still get her aid notice earlier than March because like you said, I’m assuming it was likely a small pool there for ED2 so as soon as they get all the aid packages out for ED1 and any few from ED2 they can hopefully start working on hers!!

I saw someone post on Reddit yesterday that they’d been accepted, and that they received a $30K merit scholarship but wanted to appeal for a bit more money to make the school affordable.

No indication of whether this student applied EA – I didn’t realize RIT had an ED2, so maybe it was that?

Also I’ve read that $30K is the maximum merit scholarship right now (not including the alumni referral, national merit or performing arts scholarship, all of which are stackable on top of base merit). So that part seems legit?

Oy, I really wish RIT released decisions on a specified day! All this waiting around is the WORST, lol.

All the waiting IS the worst huh?! If they received their merit amount along with the acceptance they must have been some form of ED I would think since our EA decision didn’t come with anything. Crossing fingers it’s a small pool of folks and they can move on to EA acceptances and aid packages soon for all our sake!

Not sure how helpful this might be but will share the timeline for D26 who initially applied EA for a BFA in studio art. 32 ACT, 3.9 UW/4.3W, 6 APs.

Dec 4 - emailed admissions requesting move to ED2, took a couple of days for status to update in portal

Dec 12 - acceptance and merit aid award notification

Dec 15 - performing arts scholarship notification

Jan 7 - official financial aid award letter (FAFSA received by RIT Oct 28)

In addition to a summer visit, D26 did a virtual Connect and Critique for art portfolio feedback and another virtual meeting with a professor in her intended concentration.

The deposit has been made and D26 and is looking forward to meeting her potential roommate in the flesh at the hockey event next weekend for ED admitted students.
