Last year, I used my vacation selling a house and moving into a new one. Needless to say, it was a sucky vacation. This year, my niece is getting married, so we get a chance to give the new car a real workout. My 18 year old daughter opted to stay home so she can have the house to herself. Win-win, as far as I’m concerned. I get a road trip with my wife…so we can drive each other crazy. Any good road trip plans?
Where’s the wedding?
It’s in Salt Lake City. We’re trying to pick a good scenic route from Texas without having to take too many one-lane back roads. Taking the interstates the whole way adds a lot of extra driving time.
Thought you were in WVa? Or is that someone else?
Probably someone else…but I haven’t taken a road trip east yet. Maybe I’ll do that next year.
I’ve been on many many road trips. It’s my preferred way to travel but this year we’re flying to our vacation destination because we can’t leave the dog that long and our car is past road trip capability, hopefully to be replaced in the next year though. We could rent, but would still have the dog issue. My best advice is food related - road trip snacks are very important and we also like to stop for lunch in small towns and eat where the locals do. Public libraries or cultural centers are good places to ask where’s the best place to get lunch.
So many great options of places to visit between Texas and SLC. It really depends on how much time you have, what you want to see and how hot it will be and your tolerance. Do you want to stop in National Parks or forest? See Cities? Or simply looking for the best way to drive without a lot of site seeing?
On that route I’d stop at some or all of:
- Carlsbad, NM to see Carlsbad Caverns (book well in advance) and possibly Guadalupe Mountains (though in summer it may be too hot)
- Santa Fe, NM (we found a side trip to Los Alamos and Bandelier to be a great day out)
- Cortez, CO to see Mesa Verde (or go to Ouray, CO on the Million Dollar Highway and then through Grand Junction, CO)
- Moab, UT to see Arches/Canyonlands
Agree-- Lots in New Mexico (Santa fe, Abq, parks etc. Great roadtrip!
Yellowstone or Grand Tetons?
Was thinking of route 89 through the Grand Canyon. I hear it’s quite scenic.
Hove you checked out Roadtrippers.com? We love roadtrips and try to keep legs around 2 hours max, but will do 2 legs with an activity/stop in between on sone days.
When is this trip?
Agree- will make a difference
If it’s a summer trip, know that places like Moab with be HOT!
We came back from our road trip. Ugh! I’m flying next year! And I’m going to someplace with a beach.
Never a dull moment! Thunderstorms/ hurricanes can affect summer beach plans.
There’s no place like home sweet home.![]()
Yeah, it seems like a lousy time to travel to a beach from Texas. ![]()
