Our Roku box is about 7 years old. It works fine but we have noticed that it is ok on Netflix, slow on Acorn tv and very, very slow when we use Amazon Prime. We have wondered if maybe we would see an improvement if we got a new Roku box. We looked up buying one and were surprised to see how many different ones are out there. The selection is dizzying.
We don’t have cable tv and we don’t watch network tv, so we rely on this for our tv viewing. Any advice for us?
Thanks in advance!
Before you purchase a new one check that the problem is not the quality(strength of signal) of wifi it is receiving. We have all slowly introduced more wifi devices into our homes (echos, roku, etc.) and sometimes this has a negative effect on the signal strength.
The last Roku we purchased was this one - Roku Express | Easy High Definition (HD) Streaming Media Player (2018) but it looks like that one is already out of date.
We retired our old Roku and got the Roku Ultra 4K/HD/HDR (actually, we got 2…found a great black Friday deal), mostly because our old Roku did not support Disney+. But, I must say, I love the new one. It’s just a little easier to use than the old. And does seem faster.
I have four HDTV’s throughout my house, each with a specific purpose. I have different Roku box depending on the HDTV. For the one in my kitchen, I have the Roku Express with the simplest remote control (can’t power on/off the TV with this remote). For another HDTV in my basement, which I use primarily for the purposes of kids gaming and Karaoke parties and rarely for streaming, I also use this most basic remote. For the 4K HDTV in the family room as well as the one in the master room with a home theater set up, I use the Roku Ultra for not only taking advantage of 4K viewing but also being able to plug in an ear plug on the remote for silent viewing.
But I haven’t noticed any of my remotes to perform slowly. You might want to replace your batteries and see if the performance improves before getting a new one.
Agree with @TiggerDad : We were having problems with ours and the usual unplug/replug reboot did not help, but replacing the remote batteries did. I still do not understand how that could affect the performance of the stick, but it did.
The price of a new, best version, of a Roku isn’t that great- especially when on sale. I would spring for a latest version upgrade and look at your internet speed. H uses two, the new one on the best TV (although I still just go with the cable channels and connection) that is top-of-the line and the old one elsewhere. There are differences in software capabilites- newer deals better with new TV tech software. btw- there is a lag- interesting to see the same stuff a minute or more behind the same channel I had on cable and he had on in another room with a Roku.
Even an entry-level Roku Stick would run much faster than the Roku you’re using. I would suggest getting something mid-range. The high-end devices really don’t offer all that much more for the price you’re paying.
Also, you might want to consider an Amazon Fire Stick. For the price of a Roku stick you’re getting twice the speed and it has Alexa built into it.
Thanks so much for all your replies. I’d like to clarify about the source of the slowness - the streaming is not slow… programs flow normally… the slowness is in the responsiveness to buttons pushed from the remote. as if the roku needs to do a lot of processing to handle each button press.
@kiddie - we only have the Roku on WiFi. Nothing else, so I don’t think the WiFi is being over taxed.
@TiggerDad - it isn’t batteries because it is fairly responsive for acorn and netflix but very very delayed for amazon. We also did put in new batteries. But thanks for the suggestion.
