Rolling luggage recommendations?

I’m looking for a new rolling suitcase, carry-on size. I travel at least twice a month and the one I’ve been using is past its prime. I usually travel by train, and haul this suitcase all over the place, in and out of cabs, on and off subways, sometimes up and down stairs, and I usually put my heavy (stuffed with papers) laptop case on top of it and hold both handles. This is not very comfortable.

I need something sturdy but as lightweight as possible, with good ergonomics and wheels that roll easily. It would also be better if I could hang my laptop case from it rather than put it on top (against the extending handle).

I bought rolling suitcases in two sizes from Costco a couple of years ago, and have found them very hard to use - too heavy, bad ergonomics, etc. And I can’t balance my laptop on top because the handle is longer and it doesn’t work. So this time I’m doing some research up front.

I like my High Sierra 30" rolling duffel - very sturdy construction and quite bright (blue/black or . red/black) However, it doesn’t stand up straight on its own. The 36" one is big enough for a month, with a rolling bottom. Very good sales prices can be found around the net.

check out ebags…I found some great deals there and shipping is free often

we have several LLBean rolling bags. they have several styles. The first bunch we bought didn’t have telescoping handles… not a problem for me (5’2") but a problem for my husband & teenage sons, all over 6’. The second time we bought, I got the telescoping handles, they’re all much happier.

We have tried a variety of brands over the years, especially H, who travels frequently. Travelpro has been the best, by far. If you check on overstock.com, you may be able to find a deal.

My idea of good luggage is something practical because we use so much of it. It doesn’t seem to matter if the luggage is expensive or cheap, hard or soft-sided. Overall, our best and most used luggage has big sturdy wheels and firmly attached handles/pulls.

Second Travelpro. I have the heavy duty airline folks model. I still keep finding new extra pockets and bags in mine. Easy to get at 50% off.

BIG RECOMMENDATION!!!

After being at the airport for several hours last week looking for my Ds luggage, I was amazed to see so many black suitcases with no distinguishing marks- a ribbon, a piece of tape, something

My D wrote in permanent marker on her purple suitcase her address, etc…not that it was easy to miss the giant purple monster

One thing we really liked about her big suitcase the the handle on the bottom…who knew

CGM – I agree about the black luggage. My next set will be hot pink or turquoise or something unusual. For now, we have colorful luggage tags that help, but almost every case looks like one of ours.

Thanks, everyone, for the information. I will soon be the owner of a Travelpro 22" rolling suitcase that I bought on Ebay (brand new; first quality; in the box; with tags, etc. I frequently buy new stuff from Ebay). It was a great price - $129 + $18 shipping. I think the original list price was about $500, but it is last year’s model, on sale all over the web for $199.

It’s black, unfortunately. I’d like another color for the visibility factor but this will be shared with my husband, who has only one color in his vocabulary.

That $199 price is available pretty much all the time. $119 is a great price and you won’t be disappointed.

go to marshalls or tjmaxx to check out the suitcases. They usually have a large selection and a really good price.

just puts some ribbons on the handle, a BIG ole tag, my mom uses color paint or electrical tape- bright blue or green or pink - a strip on each side…can’t be missed

my Ds other suitcase, pink hawaiian print is what i use…it makes me happy

In the past I’ve used duct tape on my bag to distinguish it from the others. So many ribbons, but nobody ever seems to use duct tape! Plus, now that duct tape comes in all sorts of colors, you can put many colors of duct tape on your bag and not worry about the ribbon being cut and what-not.

My son did that with our luggage last year. He thinks Duct Tape is the universal solution to all problems. He got carried away, and didn’t just use ONE color, he made a rainbow effect on the handles of all 4 pieces. We were definitely identifiable.

My H did draw the line at the yellow tape on his bag…blue and green were just about right

My hubby has taken to putting bright red foam velcroed attachments to the handles of all his luggage (free from some computer vendors). It helps him identify his otherwise black, non-descript bags quickly.
D & I have purchased tapestry suitcases from Ross (about $20). We also have a few pieces of green luggage. All the pieces we travel frequently with have large red & white pom-poms attached to the handle which makes them readily identifiable, while not putting the men to the blush.
