Here’s a picture from Halloween. He was very proud of his Skye outfit and everyone told him what a cute girl he was. (Some days he says he’s a boy other days she says she’s a girl. I go with the flow.)
Adorbs!!
And, how is school?? Are you almost done? What’s next??
Yes!!
Thanks for the update on Ren. And the photo!
But do tell about yourself as well.
(I must admit, when I saw this thread pop up again, I thought Ren was going to be a big sibling.)
Ah sorry no little sibling in the cards for us. Ren is enough of a handful - don’t know what we’d do with TWO of them ![]()
I plan to defend my dissertation in August and afterwards I have zero ideas for what’s next. I’m not going the tenure track route but I’d love to stay in academia. Ideally I want to work in either student advocacy or disability advocacy. UX research is another path I think I’d be good at but I don’t have experience.
My options are a bit hampered by the fact that I don’t want to relocate, so I’m hoping a remote or hybrid position finds its way to me. We’ll see.
If anyone here has leads, I’m more than open to them ![]()
Why aren’t you going the “tenure track route”??
I love it when we hear from you, but I’ve gotta say that reading about your life reminds me that I’m getting old! Ha ha, it’s okay, better than dying young!
Happy to hear how happy your child is! Treasure these moments, because they sure do fly by.
Because of my lupus, it makes it VERY difficult to do the publish or perish route that is required from my field. I mean, it’s taken me almost a decade just to finish my PhD. I simply do not have the health or energy for it.
I LOVE teaching and lecturing is maybe an option. It doesn’t pay as well but it would let me continue doing what I love.
Plus I would like to work more on the advocacy side of things. I want to be able to support students from across the university as opposed to just in my classes.
At some schools, administrators can also teach a class. It would be cool if you could find a place that would let you do both.
This site is good for higher Ed jobs: Michigan - Higher Education Jobs - Higher Education Recruitment Consortium.
This isn’t going to help you, but I think what you are looking at is a good idea. My DIL got her PhD last fall and landed a job at Cambridge University supporting one of their junior year abroad programs. (Her Phd was about 20th c. migrant labor.) My son is in England and she was super lucky to find something within driving distance of his post. She’s really enjoying the work and while she’s not teaching now, she says the possibility is there that she could in the future. Originally she thought (and she still may) go into NGO work eventually. It’s a crime that adjunct professors get paid so little.
Great idea! I’ve known a couple people who worked as academic liasons – either with the athletic department or a program supporting FGLI students – and who also taught a class or two each year. In every case, it was a great alternative to a tenure track, but a track all the same. And lots of student contact.
