My son is looking for an inn within a few hours drive, for New Years. I thought maybe some NE people know of a lovely place for a young couple. Any suggestions are welcome.

Best bet are some of the ski/B&B places in Vermont and New Hampshire–hotels on the Cape are probably closed for the season. There might be some nice B&B’s in the Berkshires (western MA), in Lenox, Stockbridge or Williamstown, but again–they’re better in the summer. I’d stick with VT/NH, or even Portland, ME (closer than you’d think).

Use Tripadvisor…

Porches in North Adams. Near Mass MOCA. Lovely place.

Look near Sturbridge. Not too far, historic, quaint. Also some of the Connecticut shoreline B&Bs – Mystic, Madison, etc.

any specifics within a 2-3 hour drive? So many look good on internet, but hoping someone had a favorite.

For romantic, check out Wheatleigh in Lenox Mass. But it’s pricey.

Porches is nice (but not “romantic” – more straightforward and cool and hip feeling).

Although when you’re young and in love, a Holiday Inn is romantic. :)

I have stayed at all of these for different occasions… although the with Hotel Northampton the “occasion” was getting stranded on I-91 in a blizzard on Christmas day a few years ago ;-)… a very happy accidental discovery.

Mt Washington Hotel if you want that 1920s feel.

Twin Farms in Vt is exquisite. It is about 3/12 hours from Boston. It might be booked for the holiday season. The Balsams in NH is nice too-- my D and son-in-law went skiing there last January. Their view was that it was very old school. We have also rented a condo at Stow Mountain Lodge for our kids to ski and they all loved it. The last two are very nice, but resort like. Twin Farms is much smaller.

Look up the Colby Hill Inn, Henniker NH. It’s not too fancy to overwhelm, and can be reached in 2 hours from downtown Boston. Once there, can try a ski day at Pat’s Peak in Henniker (a 5 mile, easy drive from the inn). Another day trip up northward 1 hour takes them deep into the White Mountain National Forest. That’s very dramatic for hiking, but they can wait from their inn for best driving weather to go.
For a movie or shopping, the state capitol Concord is 18 miles away.

I only know it because my family lives near there, and we used it to house all our wedding guests back in the day.

“Downtown Henniker” is a cute small-college town with one blinking light. There, Daniels Pub and Restaurant offers an appealing meal for a young couple. There are various shoppES – bakeries and old-time pharmacy – a healthy walk from the inn. Of course the Colby Hill Inn also serves meals. There might be an Asian restaurant in town, too - it’s been awhile since I’ve visited Henniker.

Best entertainment these days in NH is hearing the presidential candidates – they’re everywhere!

They oughta be looking for something that doesn’t offer the same experience they enjoy in their own bedroom.

The romantic factor gives me the ewee factor

Suggest something fun as Faulty Towers or Newhart,s (Waybury). A ton of good times and laughs. :)

^LOL, you’ve got a point there, LongPrime!

I suspect some of the Cape Cod places remain open. We liked Newport in October - I hear it is pretty at Christmas too.

Nantucket would be lovely at New Year’s if the weather is OK.
