Room Decor/Beer Caps and Wine Corks

I’m trying to pick out room decor for my dorm but I’m not sure if the wine cork cages are allowed. If your RA saw wine corks/bottle caps on desplay would you get in trouble? I’m planning on attending Michigan State if that matters.

Look at the specific housing policies at your college. Yes, at my university that would be considered a policy violation to have decorative alcohol containers/items in one’s room.

My neighbor at Tufts decorates his room with empty Grey Goose bottles…RA just laughed. Even if it is against school policy I would say it’s up to how tough your RA is for you to get reported. At least at Tufts, my RA wouldn’t care and even if he did, you are warned before room checks and RAs are not allowed to go through drawers, non-university fridges or cubbies.

Check your university policies. While some RAs won’t write you up for that kind of thing, if it’s against your university’s policy many RAs (myself included) would confiscate the “decorations” if they saw them and write you up.

Why not just email res life at your college and ask?

At most places empty bottles aren’t technically a violation, but might earn you a little extra scrutiny from res life, especially if you have a lot. Wine corks, on the other hand, probably wouldn’t get a second notice. But I agree that you should check out your university’s policy first!

Yes, it makes sense to find out the school’s policy. But even if it was “legal”, I would wait until you get to college and get a sense of how strict things are in general and with your RA specifically before going with those decorative themes.
