My S’s roommate is dropping out at the end of the semester. Both names are on the lease, my S is calling the landlord tomorrow but I am curious tonight how the rent will work starting in January. In the past, they each wrote a separate check to the landlord. My S’s name is on the utilities and they are minimal. Any help is appreciated.

My guess is that your son will be liable for the full amount of rent . . . and it will be up to him to go after the roommate to collect.

Look at it this way - they both signed the lease, so they are both individually liable for the full amount of the rent. Imagine if it was a married couple who’d signed a lease . . . and the husband moved out. Wife would be liable for the rent.

He needs to find a new roommate quickly!

dogersmom is totally right. Roommate has the responsibility too. Your son needs to find out another roommate, sublease. Some students went for study abroad and coming back for next semester are looking for place to live now.
