Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Hi,
My son has been accepted at RHIT. Are there any parents whose kids go here currently?

  1. Is it worth the money?
  2. Is there diversity on campus
  3. is the program and faculty supportive of students
  4. is it safe
Looking forward to hearing more about this school. The reviews I have read so far seem like it’s a great school. Thanks!!!

My son is a sophomore there now.

I would definitely say it’s worth every penny we have spent so far. My kid is working harder than he would at almost any other school and is getting an excellent education.

There is some diversity on campus. There are a fair number of international students, but you also have to realize that you are in the mid-west, which tends to not be particularly diverse to begin with.

The program is very supportive of students. This was the one school my kid looked at and when we asked “why should this kid come to Rose” the answer was, “if you want to get a general engineering degree you can go anywhere. The difference here at Rose is that your kids will be pushed to their absolute limits, but will be supported by the faculty the entire time.” I have found that to be 100% accurate. Has my kid had some not-so-great teachers? Yep, you’ll find that at any school. However, even those not-so-great teachers have been supportive. Professors often don’t have office hours posted because whenever they are in their offices, their doors are open and students can just pop in to ask questions. This is pretty much expected of all faculty.

Safety is not an issue. Kids do not lock their doors. Ever. When they go into the dining hall, they will leave their backpacks out in the hallway. These backpacks all have computers, tablets, headphones, etc in them. There is never a worry about anything being stolen.

Rose truly has been a blessing for my kid. He has found “his people” and while we get some phone calls when he is really, really stressed, he is also having the best time of his life.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions!

My pleasure! We are from New England, so I get the distance thing. If Rose had been on the eastern coast, my kid would have signed on the dotted line almost instantly. Once he got over the distance, he knew that it was the right place for him. If you are on FB, and haven’t yet, please join the Rose parent’s page. There is a ton of information there!

We were just visiting Rose last weekend as my son makes his final decision. yes, it is a bit costly, but higher paycheck at end
Safe - yes. Diversity - well still dominated by white males, but was glad to see 3 out of every 10 students were female. My rough estimate. Also that there was no “ uniform “. Some students wore sweatpants, others dress pants, some shorts, etc. wide variety of styles.

Watch some of the videos they will send your child on “ Why Rose?”
