Ross Grad School

If one were to consider obtaining a graduate degree in business (from a school in the caliber of Ross) should one work in industry for a few years before applying? If so how much weight does one’s undergraduate record factor into decisions including but not limited to GPA, rigor of courses, prestige of school?

MBA programs similar to Ross will usually expect/prefer some full-time work experience. On average, 3-5 years. One’s undergraduate record matters a lot, naturally. Most MBA programs of Ross’ level will look for an undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or better, and a GMAT in the 700+ range. However, in addition to demonstrated academic ability, MBA programs want to see a track record of professional success, so at least one promotion during the 3-5 years of post-college work experience.

One absolutely needs to work in industry for a few years (anywhere from 2 - 5 years may be typical) before attending a top MBA program. The school they come from and their record there do play a factor but others could comment better on how much. Even more key is the employment record (so to speak) and the GMAT.

Thanks for the info
