For parents of students applying to Ross for fall of 2025 (or not applying to Ross and instead applying to LSA) – since the application direct to Ross is a change up for Michigan from prior years - interested to hear if people decided to put their eggs in the Ross bucket or instead applied to LSA. Welcome thoughts people have about this change/how it will impact the Ross undergraduate acceptance rate, or anything else anyone wants to add. Thank you!
Not a 2025 parent. IMO, if a student is certain they want to study business, they should choose a school with direct admit to business and/or easy/clearly defined transfer options.
Michigan says they are going to continue to accept the same number of students to Ross as always, and allow the same number of preferred admissions and transfers.
Note that LSA does not have preferred admit option to Ross: Preferred Admission | University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Last year’s Ross acceptance rate was just under 8%.
2022 transfer acceptance rate was 27%…note that process is holistic, not guaranteed based on taking the required courses and having high grades. Holistic means they will try to balance gender, choose those with varying backgrounds/lived experience, etc.
100% - nothing else makes any sense. Why attend a school and study something you don’t want to study - no matter how good you think the potential outcomes might be from the other major? This is four years, day after day - study what you desire.
Yes, I agree.
I was just thinking that application numbers will decrease to Ross given the change making it a direct-to-Ross application means the student doesn’t have an LSA admit to fall back on if the student is not accepted to Ross. Just wondering what others have heard, anecdotally or otherwise, or what others think about this change and how it will impact the Ross acceptance rate (my guess is the acceptance rate will go up due to less applicants).
Interested to hear others’ thoughts!
Who cares what others think ? What do you want to study ?
That’s all that matters.
I think people will vote with their desires.
Gaming rarely works.
Let’s say you get into LSA. You will live life regretful you didn’t take that Ross chance.
IU is a near equal sub. Get in you win. Get rejected you win.
Also, for example, a student might decide to study economics in LSA versus studying aspects of economics within the Ross School of Business.
If that’s their desire then they should apply LSA.
Why work your butt off getting ready to apply to college and apply for a second choice in hopes acceptance odds are better.
Bet on yourself….not against.
If you don’t get in, there’s plenty of great schools where you’ll crush it at. UMN is another strong one.
I’m not applying for a second choice hoping acceptance odds are better. Just passing time here and wondering what people think about applications to Ross this year given the change. Just conversation to pass the time - end of January is far off.
But what is your interest ?
No ned to pas time. Work on essays.
All apps are submitted, don’t you worry about me.
Anyone know when decisions come out exactly?
I believe in the last three (four?) years they’ve released the last Friday of the month, which will be January 31 this year if they follow that trend.
And I believe at 3pm EST.
Jan 31 at 3:00 pm Eastern Time. Bank on it.
Yield will increase. Rejections will increase since not only Ross but school of information etc are pre admit also.
Cross campus transfer is 100 students into Ross. So as an example a LSA student takes the prerequisites to Ross and applies end of freshman year. It’s very competitive. That is part of the 500 students they take for Ross each year. I wrote about this on the Michigan RD thread today.
If you only want Business school then go for it. But I am in the camp also that students that want business can still get that at Michigan. Yes, taking economics and maybe doing a Ross minor or similar business minor. I know too many students working at impressive companies doing business that went this route. Michigan tends to be a slight outlier in this regard. Many interviewed for the same companies as Ross students. Not all but some. But you won’t have a business degree. Some students want to go to Michigan for their other opportunities, which are many.
But, if you really want only business then apply pre admit.
Read today on Univ of Michigan Parent FB page that Ross admissions said they had over 13,000 applications this year - an increase in over 4,000 applications from 2024. If Ross accepted 800, acceptance rate was approx 6%.
If this is all true, my original prediction was wildly off.
Wow. And last year they reported about 52% of the class for Ross was in-state. Super selective. And again makes things very interesting with the Ross or nothing approach. Makes me wonder how many great students would otherwise get in for another major.
From the Ross BBA blog:
I agree that this is very interesting with the Ross or nothing approach. That was our approach, but I do know of several students from our HS and others in our area that applied LSA (economics) because they were scared off by the Ross competition. (Turns out none were accepted into LSA.) It was just such a tough year all around.
Agreed. It’s so expensive OOS that it was kind of a relief. We are outside of Boston, public school. Six kids in this year’s class committed (none for Ross). My junior will apply next year for LSA. At least there’s no portfolio . Still waiting on WL or did yours decide?
Mine is going to Ross! Deposited the day of acceptance (again, Ross or nothing!).
Cannot believe you are starting this process over again . . . here’s hoping it is a less rollercoastery ride (although I am guessing it will be much the same). Good luck to your daughter (UWM, right?) – so exciting!!!
