Ross to Real Estate?

I am planning on going to UMich and going to Ross. I want to be a real estate developer some day. Do they have Real Estate as one of their business administration focuses (foci?)? I know it’s not a top 10 school for real estate, but would going there make it hard to find a job in real estate (I assume it’s already hard enough with the economy)? Would it be a lot easier to go to a school like Wisconsin or Georgia?

Real Estate is very regional. Given that, you probably wouldn’t want to attend Georgia unless you wanted to live in the Southeast upon graduation.

I do not think you would be at any great disadvantage going to Ross. I have met Ross alumni in real estate, and assume that they have a pretty large network.

Commercial real estate is a subset of finance, and Ross does have a defined set of courses that you should take to go into real estate:

[BBA Program - Finance Department - Stephen M. Ross School of Business](<a href=“Faculty Academic Areas | Michigan Ross”>Faculty Academic Areas | Michigan Ross)

Looks good to me.

Very few Ross people follow the RE track and I doubt many of the major RE firms recruit there as there are few RE focus kids to recruit.

^ Recruiting is less important than the alumni contacts that the school can provide as many jobs are found by word of mouth. While I’m certain that Wisconsin has a much more extensive real estate network, I have a hard time believing that Michigan does not also have a good network. There are at least 3 billionaire real estate moguls who graduated from UM: Sam Zell, Jorge Perez, and Stephen Ross (the school’s namesake).

Given Ross’s strengths in finance and it’s real estate course offerings, it is hard for me to believe that there aren’t a decent number of students that enter into real estate (particularly in the higher paying areas which are more finance focused).

FWIW, I know someone who has been quite successful in real estate out of Ohio State of all places.
