Students interested in pursuing language or cultural studies majors should examine the opportunities available in the Navy’s Language, Regional Expertise, and Cultural Awareness (LREC) Program offered at select NROTC units listed below. Annually, the Navy will offer this program to 20 - 30 students. Attainment of a specific level of language proficiency is not required by the NROTC LREC program.

My s looked into this a little. Apparently, you need to major in a particular area of the world and minor in a related language or vice versa. A great opportunity for kids who are passionate about a certain part of the world. Unfortunately, s is interested in ALL parts of the world (lol).

Looks like UT has a great Dept of Middle Eastern Studies and it looks like the Army and Air Force are taking advantage of it- this is all relatively new. Thanks for posting this!

The military is really encouraging foreign language and culture learning for new military officers. West Point also encourages their cadets to go abroad and learn the language and culture. Opportunities for this have really increased in just the past couple of years. Cadets have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester, spend spring break at a foreign military academy, take part in Advanced Individual Academic Development in a foreign country over spring break or in the summer.
Hundreds of cadets took part in these programs last year. I believe the Air Force Academy has similar programs.

I found this news release from the DOD dated May, 2007. This is when the program began:

Dd took part in a persian language program and study abroad the following summer similar to this (but not rotc related) - all paid for through the strategic language initiative grants. There are many different ways to get paid language study these days, if you are interested in a strategic language!
