my son is going to be a junior this year, and now is talking about becoming a officier in the military.he,s majoring in chemical engineering.can anybody tell me anything about this program.i’ve been trying to talk him out of it all summer, but he seems to have his mind made up. help please

Why are you trying to talk him out of it?

Anyway, the ROTC program comprises of a few military-related classes and frequent exercises with the unit throughout the week. There are also summer tours. Your son will receive his commission when he graduates after completing the necessary officer training over the summer.

He will then have an active-duty commitment to the US Military (usually six years for officers) followed by a period of inactive reserve. All US Military contract are eight years, but only a portion are on active duty, and the remainder are on inactive reserve. Inactive reserve is basically nothing; you go back to living as a a civilian and you don’t have to report to any duty, ever. Inactive reserve is just used in the case of national emergency or crisis.
