Ok, so a photographer friend of mine wants to take pix of really neat old towns and out of the way diners. Another girl friend will join the two of us and we will fly from So Cal to Chicago, spend a day or two and then rent a convertable and drive Route 66 back to So Cal. (think Thelma and Louise plus one and no illegal stuff…or at least that we are willing to admit)

Suggestions for stops, eats, sights along the way? How long for each section? Warnings???

Would love the CC advice here

Just west of OK City there’s a stretch that goes througn a smaller town with a diner famous for their onion burgers. In New Mexico there’s a fine old New Mexican restaurant about an hour east of Alb.

other suggestions please?!

I’d also bring along a copy of Jane and Michael Stern’s Road Food, or just check out their website: All about Roadfood - Roadfood; Apparently Route 66 doesn’t go through Kansas City, but I can’t imagine being in Kansas without stopping for Arthur Bryant’s BBQ. You might also check out if Calvin Trillin covers your territory. 25 years ago his Alice Let’s Eat was our eating out Bible, but I don’t know which eateries he mentions are still around.

Lonely Planet also has a Route 66 guide.

Make sure you play on a loop that ‘I get my kicks on Route 66’ song.
