Route to College Station

So, we’re coming from Memphis, TN and will be taking I-40 to Little Rock, then I-30 to Texarkana but there are several choices once we get through Texarkana. We took one route when we went to visit back in October 2010, but it seemed pretty difficult (lots of turns and lots of 2 lane roads). Is there anyone out there that has tried the various routes and can recommend the best one?

If you want to avoid two-lane roads as much as you can, take 59 and stay on it as long as you can, at least as far as Lufkin or maybe even Corrigan. 59 isn’t limited access, at least not much of it is, but it has four lanes most of the way.

My Company has an office in Memphis and I have traveled by car there many times. We also have a weekend place near Crockett, TX. So I know the roads in the area very well. The best Route would be as follows:

I40 to Little Rock, AR
I30 to Texarkana
U.S. 59 to Nacogdoches, TX - Take 59 bypass around Nacogdoches.
Take TX-7 to Crockett, TX, Go through Crockett.
Just West of the Crockett Loop 304 TX-7 and TX-21 Split. Take TX-21. This will take you all the way to Bryan, TX. You can pick up TX-6 in Bryan, to the TAMU exits.

From Nacogdoches to Bryan is all 2 lane roads. However, they are easy drives and the drive from Nacogdoches to Crockett is quite scenic for Texas. Also, these two lanes roads are 70 mph almost all the way.

The only difficult part of this trip is negotiating the square in Crockett. Just remember it is one way counter clockwise and you will have no problems.

Also, Crockett has a couple of great places to eat. Thompson’s BBQ on the loop. (Smoked Boudin is awesome) Moosehead Cafe on the the square for an old fashioned burger and also on the square is an authentic Taqueria (Taco House) called M.L.A. De Nortena.

I hope this helps and safe travels. Gig’em.

Thank you both for your quick responses! I’ll be sure to use your recommendations when mapping out the route! :D
