RPI [$52k], UVM [$42k], Pitt [$62k] & SMCM [$27k]... W&M waitlist

I’m still confused. So you’d prefer W&M geology rather than elsewhere in environmental engineering?

Just making sure I understand.

Congratulations @MnMs_Mom to your daughter.

It sounds like she has exactly what she has decided she wants in a college…and that is what matters! Best of luck to her…and enjoy your visit to WM!

I think they like the distance to W+M versus the other options with Env. Eng. I think Geo can be entertwined esp if they go on to get a masters/ post doc.

OK - it’s a big if that someone will go on - but if they decide to work, it doesn’t mean they won’t get a job, but statistically it will be much more difficult and at a lower pay. They can always find a closer school with EnvE

Good luck to them.

I cannot weigh in on the career path and salary question, so not taking that on. My daughter (about to graduate) is in a completely different study area with different aspirations. I WILL say that William & Mary has been pretty much of a dream college experience for my daughter in so many ways. It’s small enough and yet big enough, small, picturesque town and the most beautiful campus one could hope for, but not remote. She truly came out of her shell and made friends with other students and connections with fascinating, approachable, supportive professors and she grew so much in confidence. I wish your child all the best, whatever the decision!

Ok, down to the final 2.

RPI or UVM for Environmental Engineering?

Yes !!! Meaning which did she prefer ??

What took W&M off ?

I think RPI punches way above outcome wise - almost elite. But RPI will be heavily gender imbalanced toward male and UVM female although I don’t know how it looks at UVM in engineering.

Good luck

I think we are down to the wire w W+M and since she didnt visit ever, will likely not know, also cost will be significantly higher!

So leaning towards RPI over UVM as its closer & smaller.

For any kind of engineering major my vote would go to RPI over UVM.

Thank you!

This was just posted on another thread - while it’s not RPI vs. UVM; it’s W&M vs. UVM but the writer had some observations that might help you:

Have you gone to accepted student days at either/both schools? My daughter was also accepted to both, with honors college and great scholarship at UVM and Monroe Scholars and a smaller scholarship at W&M. We went to both schools’ accepted student days. UVM, she knew within minutes of arriving on campus that it was not for her. W&M, she fell in love before the formal program even started, and it only got better from there. It’s about $15k more per year, but neither would require loans or hardship, and we’re happy to pay that for what is clearly a school more likely to set her up for a better experience, for her. UVM may be better for someone else. We wouldn’t have known, without visiting. She’s a STEM girl too, environmental engineering at UVM and chemistry at W&M. The engineering school programming at UVM was underwhelming for her, and science presentations so exciting and inspiring.

Thanks for your input! We have made it to both accepted student days… of course waitlisted at W+M so we have not visited. Similar in the geology vs. Env eng though at both.

Yeah it was the UVM engineering comment I thought you might be interested in.

I think engineering is the FAR better play - just my opinion - so I think not getting into W&M is a blessing in disguise.

Thank you! We will see how this plays out, RPI is closer to us too. But still 6 hours away!

That’s not too far  Really, that’s why they invented facetime…and I’m sure you can find options for holiday visits - shared rides, etc. And while I don’t know where you are, Albany has an airport with some decent connections.

I agree RPI is a true engineering powerhouse. So if someone is interested in engineering and does not have an option they clearly prefer, RPI is a good choice!
