i got mine today too :)

Have you decided which lectures to sign up for? And is it helpful to go to lectures related to the topics we’ll be working in?

I’m going to bio and chem, hehe. But hm… I suppose it might be helpful to go in your topics (give you more knowledge of the field) but it shouldn’t hurt to go to other lectures that interest you.

bio and physics… i thought i had to choose between them and i was sad but then i read it again and was happy

I’ve been thinking about math and physics, or math an bio. I’m so indecisive!

math and physics - no question

Hey, everyone!
Another bear candidate here. I’m Geeta from Austin, Texas (yes, another Indian). I’m homeschooled (any other homeschoolers here?), but do not sit cloistered in my living room all day. I can’t wait to meet everyone this summer!
I suppose I should do my little questionairre, since I’m probably one of the last RSI '05 acceptees to post here.

What did you do the summer after your sophomore year?
Summer Science Program at New Mexico Tech (mostly for Juniors, but I got in a year early). We had a research project to do over the 6 weeks, which included taking photographic exposures of an asteroid, measuring and mapping those exposure and writing a comp prog to calculate its orbital elements. It was an awesome, awesome program!

What college level courses did you take?
Diff and Int Calc, Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, US History, C++, Stellar Astronomy. Since I’m homeschooled I do a lot of dual credit stuff with the University.

Did you submit any additional work to RSI?
Nope

Test scores?
SATI: 1580
SATII–
Math IIC: 700
Math IC: 700(bear candidate, that’s right…I took them in 10th grade, though)
Writing:780
AMC12: 108
AIME: don’t ask.

What awards did you mention in the application?
Various piano competition and math competition awards. Mostly small stuff.

-What research have you done?
Just the stuff at SSP

How familiar were you with the topics you picked for your top choices?
I chose cosmology and quantum physics. I’ve kind of had a lifelong obsession with cosmology, so I’m familiar with it…that, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean I know much about it, though.
Same thing with quantum physics.

Finally, what do you think was the deciding factor?
I have NO CLUE. I dunno, recommendations? girl in math and science (thank you, Lawrence H. Summers)? RSI admissions wanting a good laugh?

I’m really glad I stumbled across this thread. Let the good times roll!

“Let the good times roll!”

hahahaha… sorry…hahhaha

heehee. sorry. maybe I got a bit overexcited. but seriously, I can’t wait.

Hey!

Sorry to get off the topic, but I thought that you guys, of all people, would know the answer to this question ^_^

How did you start researching before RSI? Eg. Choosing the topic, finding the mentor, finding the facility. =)

Thanks

Emailed univs.

For the classes thing, is it just for the first week? I can’t choose two…but field is biology (for RSI) but my subjects in decreasing order of how good I am at them are: Math, Phys, Chem, Bio, so should I go for Math and Bio or what? I DEF. want a math class, but how much does the class have to do w/ your field?

classes are only conducted the first week. It’s just a seminar every morning.

Go into the classes you love and wish to learn more about. The class doesn’t have to do with your field. In math class, you’re taught by Chris Skinner (RSI 88), Andrew Wiles’s graduate student. Wiles was the guy who proved Fermat’s Last Theorem.

Andrew Wiles’ grad student? Wow. RSI is amazing.

:) You won’t realize the “amazingness” of RSI until the college admission process complete!!

Jamie Rubin, RSI 02, was selected by Newsweek as one of “15 Students You Don’t Know… But Will” in the nation.

"He puts 4000 West Point cadets through their paces daily. She scored the gamewinning goal in the semifi nals of the 2004 Olympics. He created one of the Internets largest file-sharing websites. She found a cure for a disease that plagues AIDS and cancer victims. And theyre walking around your campus and sitting next to you in class.

Meet the fifteen undergrads that make up The Vanguard 2005. Current spent the last few months scouring college campuses across the nation, looking for the future leaders of the country in their respective fields.

We narrowed down a truly daunting pool of candidates to the most charismatic leaders, innovative minds and talented individuals we could find. Committed and passionate, our Vanguard is ready to go out and make its mark.

So, remember these names and faces, because we bet that it wont be long before youll be seeing them again."

Guess which one she is? :p

…holy Crap That Kid Is Amazing!

Ah, one thing:
Can we bring laptops to RSI? If so, is there a wireless internet connection throughout? I can’t live without AIM in my room…lol

For some reason, they discourage you from getting your own laptop, but I’m not leaving my laptop behind for 6 weeks.

<a href=“Housing & Residential Services | Division of Student Life”>Housing & Residential Services | Division of Student Life;

If you check the network access, you’ll noitce that wireless is supported in our dorm, yay!

As far as I know, you’re allowed but discouraged from bringing your laptop.

MIT is relatively well-connected, with every dorm room at least wired for Ethernet. I believe RSI is in East Campus again this year (or perhaps Simmonds), both of which are supposedly covered wirelessly.
http://web.mit.edu/network/wireless-map.html

I did not bring a laptop and despite doing a lot of programming at RSI, did not mind. If you do bring a laptop, I recommend using it for something other than AIM …

Congrats and enjoy!

Wow, this place has gone rather quiet. Has anyone gotten an info packet from RSI yet? I got the massive one with all the forms, so now I’m sitting around, twiddling my thumbs, and waiting for more RSI-induced excitement. I hope everyone’s APs went well (I assume that’s where everyone’s gone).
