RSI 2005 - introductions/getting to know each other

yup, that’s me. You have two people going to RSI from your school? Wow.

it’s not that abnormal to have two people from the same school. blair in MD does that most years i think.

No mentor contact here.

Don’t worry. Most don’t get mentors before Meet your Mentor night. Some don’t have it even after that. It all turns out all right.

Just thought I post what an RSI’03 alumni said:

RSI is pretty much like getting a letter from every college and scholarship program in the country saying, “Hello, We will do everything down to licking your boots to get you at our school or get you to have our scholarship money.” "

RSI wants students who can do research (i.e. creative, hard working, works well with others, good communication skills), not those who can take standardized tests (which are pretty irrelevant). No amount of stats will get you into RSI. If you’re there, you notice something about RSI kids. There’s a certain intangible quality. Some people are RSI (yes, it’s an adjective now), and some aren’t RSI. It’s not how great your achievements are. It’s something more elusive. And you have that!

The other thing, as much as I said it’s not about scores, the great majority of them are in the 1500-1600 range, and many have 1600s. Just keep that in mind. Scores or no scores, no underqualified kid will make it to RSI. Only an overachiever will.

5% acceptance equates to 95% rejectance. It’s like what Al Sharpton says when people say he won’t win: “You know what? I have a big surprise for you. There are eight of us. Seven of us are gonna lose.”

Good quote, staticsoliloquy. I like the Al Sharpton quote, and the theme is very comforting.

Has anyone gotten the info packet yet? I got the preliminary email with excerpts, but I’m still waiting around for the real deal. I’m starting to get a bit worried. I bought my airline ticket today though, so they better not decide to cancel all the bear candidates.

Don’t worry- I haven’t gotten my info packet yet either… I’m sure they’re on the way.

hey, I didn’t even get any preliminary email!

Static, thank you so much for all the encouragement. You’re coming to visit, right?

Sue, I can forward it if you want

haha okay, thanks! I’ll send you my address.

The student handbook arrived here. 89 students are participating this year!

How can there be more than 80? I didn’t get the package (but thanks to Hamid, had it forwarded to me!), is that bad?

anyone want to send it to me?

Sent it to your address, Sue. (the one in the packet)

thank you so much! now I don’t have to worry that they decided to reject me after all! :D

89 students? Maybe this just goes to show that the class of 06 is the most awesome class ever. ^^v

hehe could someone please send me the handbook, too?

and maybe we’ve got 89 'cause there’s no Caltech this year?

I’ll send it to you, Alice.

please send it to me also

Sue is offline, so I sent it to you derick! :-)
