Application is almost done! A bit worried because I had to make the borders pretty narrow to fit the essays on three pages… haha.

@sbob13: You can run this JavaScript:

document.getElementById(“edit-submitted-multivariable-calculus-3”).checked = false;

Everything else should be in that general format, where the number at the end is the number of the option just for that subject. So 1 is AB for calculus, but regular for multivariable calculus.

Realized my essays are about a topic in the subfield, not an actual question/problem… Is that okay? Did everyone have a specific question/problem in mind when they wrote their essay?

Well, I guess the question asks for both; you’re supposed to both articulate your interests and state an interesting problem in the field (and why it is interesting).
You should definitely have a problem stated for each subfield, though.

Speaking of essays, would any RSI alumni like to send me an essay (por favor)?
I can’t PM right now, though (too few total posts lol)

How specific or general are these problems supposed to be? For example I am currently researching on a very specific aspect of a problem which can be extrapolated to humans as part of my lab- would stating this problem and my research question together with explaining why it is important to me be a valid approach to the question? Or for example I say obesity is a major problem and go on from there?

@Babolat1 I am worried about that too, except mine are definitely suppppeeeerrr general… Essay 3 for me was only like 10 lines long, and I barely had room to fit in anything. I just put down (one of my subtopics was biomaterials) “I think interesting issues in this field are tissue regeneration and drug delivery systems because they are versatile and applicable in many fields.” And that’s it. LOL. I listed some cool things in the field before that though, like “In biomaterials, leaps in joint replacement surfaces and environmentally sound biopolymers are definitely awesome” or something like that. BUT they’re not my interests, not really… So I kinda have like 4 “problems” stated. Bad? Well I already mailed mine so I can’t change it now…

So close to being finished! Can’t wait to finally send this in…

How are you supposed to submit the list of accomplishment? I couldn’t find the place for it online.

@leatherlibrarian

I don’t think that we can upload them (i think that was a typo), but it does say to “print and mail with rest of application” so that’s what I did.

I know this has been asked, but have we come to a consensus about what to do if your research mentor lives in a different state and can’t get their rec to you to include in your application envelope? Does RSI allow the mentor to mail the rec directly to them?

^yes. They can mail it separately - just be sure they put your name on it :D

You can get a regular postcard (with the stamp and no pictures ) for 35 cents from the US Post office.

@WeIsCool How long were each of your essays? Did you change the margins any?
And did you left-justify or full-justify your essays?

Question about the postcard: So I know you self address it to yourself and put a stamp on, but is that all the requirements? do you just write a message to yourself like, “Your application was received”

if i took biology at a local community college, that shouldn’t be included in the course work of the online application right? just checking

@nkrish: As long as you followed the explicit directions (size 12 font, max 3 paragraphs per question, max 3 single spaced pages total), I would not worry about the formatting. Seriously. As long as it looks at least somewhat professional, it should be fine.

@Gotgumption: As long as it has your address and a stamp on it, it’s fine. You don’t need to write anything else on it. Last year I just sent a bent-up traveler’s postcard I had lying around; it doesn’t matter for anything except peace of mind.

@kooshbag: You could include the college coursework in the coursework chart; I don’t see why not.

Good luck to everyone in this final week! Please don’t stress too much! :)

@nkrish I changed the margins to 0.5 inches to fit it…

^^ NOOOOO I forgot about the max 3 paragraphs!!! I have 4 VERY VERY long paragraphs for essay 6… Do you guys think this will have a lot of impact? RSI is pretty picky…

@WeIsCool uh-oh. Idk what to do about that. Perhaps contact RSI/CEE just for the sake of peace of mind. I don’t think that is as flagrant of a violation as a late arrival or a folded/stapled app.

okay thanks @LuoSciOly, because I wasn’t sure if it meant just courses taken in HS (I took this over the summer at a community college for credit so I could take AP Bio next year)
