Rsi 2013

How important is it to have two especially distinct research fields? For instance, if my true interests do lie with cellular biology/biomedicine, will I be penalized for selecting these two as my research field choices? I feel that the essay especially gives a little bit of freedom in explaining choices.

@kraxis: Basically, we cannot pick two topics that fall under the same general discipline. I’m sure CS and math are unique enough.

@Cordycepin: I actually had those two options exactly and I emailed Maite and she said ā€œno.ā€ Of course, I don’t know what the repercussions, but it definitely wouldn’t discount you. What about chem, though? It’s critical to bio, so perhaps you could talk about that? I don’t have a definite answer for you, but just do what you feel is right. I’m sure you aren’t the only one with the same problem (I was in the same boat too XD)!

@ojeshsh
When I emailed Ms. Maite, she said one research mentor and one teacher were perfectly fine. As for three, her words:

"…But please absolutely no more than 3 recommendations."
I too have only a mentor and a teacher, so I wouldn’t sweat it. Though if you send the two you have, they might let you send a follow-up, like some people have updated with SAT/AMC/PSAT etc. An RSI alum might give insight on the followup thing

@IMSA2014 Thanks for the information! I’ve already submitted the online form but perhaps I’ll consider adjusting for that small change. Best of luck!

How do we know if CEE received all of the materials? I’m talking about things like the official transcript and test scores…I would hate to through all this and then not even be considered. D:

Why couldn’t CEE write this?

ā€œPlease also include a 1-2 line list of major academic and non-academic awards or accomplishments.ā€

How long does usps priority mail take to deliver ?

Not sure how long the USPS takes… how about using FEDEX to be sure? Does RSI care if we use fast delivery methods?

A question on the max of 3 recommendations, do any of you know is it OK if all 3 letters are from teachers rather than 2 from teachers and 1 from mentor?

I thought it was maximum 2 teachers, and an optional 1 letter from a mentor (which can substitute the second teacher recommendation.) They might accept the third.

Thank you run1116. I asked the question since I saw kraxis’s post #303 where Ms. Maite says ā€œā€ā€¦But please absolutely no more than 3 recommendations." Just try to clairfy, in the scenerio that if we can get 3 teacher rec letters without much difficulty and if all the teachers have good things to say, would it be ok to send in all 3 (no mentor in this case)?

I doubt that including a third would make them throw out your application. At worst, most likely, they will see that it is not from a mentor and discard it, because of the large volume of applications. They may accept it as normal, also. If you think it would help, I don’t see much of a penalty that would result from you including it.

@IMSA2014: include a self-addressed, stamped postcard in ur package. On the pdf for part 4, when you print it out, mark that you’ve included a postcard and they’ll send it back. Doesn’t have to be a postcard though, just something stamped and self-addressed.

@everyone else: They prob wont throw out your application, but just stick to sending in two recs because that’s what they asked for in the directions. If they all have good things to say, then there’s nothing bad about sending in just two

I think USPS Priority Mail takes 3-5 days. You can check here: [Postage Price Calculator](<a href=ā€œFile Not Foundā€>http://postcalc.usps.gov/)

I’ve been stalking previous years’ RSI threads - and it seems people used to send papers/abstracts with their apps. Statisoliloquy, an alum who’s started most of those RSI threads, said he sent his.

Is this advisable? I’ve written a few papers (including one with my research supervisor), should I send any of this in :/

The application says to submit a list of academic and non-academic awards and accomplishments online, but I can’t find where I am supposed to submit it. Does anyone else know where they expect us to submit the list?

@Fanndis They mean the self-nomination part should be submitted online, i’m pretty sure you can just send in the list with your essays.

Forgot about rsi until yesterday ………I’m gonna finish my essays today (snuck in a daft punk reference LOL) , pick up my two recs on Monday, and mail everything out Tuesday by the latest.
I did better on the PSAT in 10th grade by 3 points, so do you guys think I can just use that score instead? And should I send in a photocopy of my psat score or is the Part I section where you enter your scores in by hand enough?
Thanks! n___n

@kraxis: the website says not to send any unasked for supplements, but you can always email Maite to check

@sphrsy: it says to include an uncertified and certified copy of your scores, so I sent in a photocopy of my PSAT score report and had my school send one too.

I called and asked a month ago whether to send in my research abstract - - they said NOOOOO. So don’t send in an abstract. I guess in previous years, people sent in lots of extra stuff and since every year they get more and more applicants, they can’t do that anymore - takes too much time. The lady I talked to advised me to put it into my essays, which is what I did.

does RSI consider PSAT score or SAT score ?

@numbersense You can list both or either. If ones significantly better you may just want to include that one
