Rsi 2013

I am very confused. Originally, Maite had told me that PSAT scores were required but now apparently, we are able to choose which scores we send in? I have taken the PSAT, SAT, and ACT but I really only wanted to send in my SAT. @Rickoids, what scores did you send in? What is ACTUALLY required…?

Regarding bragging, there’s a fine line between fully showing them your accomplishments and sounding arrogant. You definitely should tell them about the cool and impressive things you’ve done, and talk about your awards - it is possible to do this without sounding conceited. I like what kraxis said: “I spoke extremely briefly about my awards, but spent much more time talking about what prompted each one.”

@nkrish: Things like the format of your birthday or college start date really don’t matter. Just use your best judgment. It won’t affect anything, trust me. I have the same tendency to overanalyze those tiny details, but it’s really not what anyone should be focusing their time or thought on.

@wanttogetinbadly: My transcript and recommendation letters were folded in sealed envelopes last year.

@IMSA2014: I sent my PSAT and ACT scores last year. Ms. Ballestero is the only person who can give you a definitive answer, but my recommendation would be to just send whatever scores put you in the best light.

I didn’t request a paper copy of my SAT scores, so I only have the online report.
When they say “attach a copy of SAT scores” is it alright if I just print the unofficial online reports?
My school is sending the official reports with my transcript.
Not sure if this has already been answered…

No one has answered my question about super scoring yet. Are we allowed to do it?
Sorry for the double post…

@purplelight: that is fine.

@nkrish: since you’re given a space to indicate the date of each test section, my guess would be that you could write your highest score in each section, along with the appropriate date, and then enclose all of your score reports with the application. These types of questions are better directed to Ms. Ballestero than to the public on College Confidential. Any answer you get on here will most likely be just an educated guess.

@LuoSciOly Awesome, thanks!

How do we format our essays? Do we put our name on it? Any headers?

@luoSciOly: Thanks for making that clear. Final point of question: would there be a real ‘penalty’ for making the margins smaller? I’ve tried to remove as much as possible, but I still need 0.5 margins to fit everything in. Of course I can remove some if it matters, but does it?

I just italicized my name in 14pt font on each page of the essays, to the top right. I don’t think there is a specific format, and I don’t think mine looked that great, but it should be fine. I would put my name on each page.

Also, is anyone applying to both MITES and RSI? I’m applying to both (1/2 URM), but I’ve heard there is a really big rivalry between the two programs. If I get rejected from RSI (likely) but accepted into MITES, then that would be fairly strange, as my top choice is RSI.

Thanks LuoSciOly and kraxis! I had one more question. Can we have 2 mentor recs and 1 teacher rec? The two mentors are in different areas

^^ This one is iffy. I think you really should call CEE about that or email them: their number is (703) 448-9062. When I asked about having a mentor doing a rec letter, they said it would be considered supplemental to the 2 teacher recs. I’m pretty sure what you would do is okay, but I really couldn’t tell you. Your best bet is to ask them directly

@wanttogetinbadly: Don’t break the rules. When they’re asking for 2 teacher recs, you must send in 2 teacher recs. If you reallllly want to send in 2 supplemental recs from two different mentors, go ahead, but don’t risk sending in only 1 from a teacher.

Honestly though, if you think about it, it doesn’t matter if the two mentors are in different areas. You’re still the same person doing research, and the mentors are describing you from the same perspective, mentor-mentee. Their observations should be the same anyway regardless of what you are researching.

To everyone else, here’s one last offer to read and comment on applications. I have time to do two more before school starts tomorrow.

@njdevs14‏: I just sent yours back.

I have a feeling that they scan all the paperwork sent in since they are asking for unfolded papers and names at the top right. Any guess?
In that case margins wont matter.

Wait, I thought 1 mentor rec and 1 teacher rec was sufficient???

Yeah scratch what I said I misread and misremembered. Haha sorry I’m so unhelpful sometimes.

I can’t even go back and edit what I said… :(

@randomjason I just sent you my application, any feedback or recommendations on it would be very much appreciated!!

@randomjason I tried to email you, don’t know if it worked or not… but if you don’t have time to look it over that’s fine :smiley: thanks for offering to help all of us confused and scared applicants haha
