Rsi 2013

GPA and test scores aren’t everything.

Fingers crossed, nervous, unsure what to expect.

Tense is a good adjective–so is restless.

Tentatively, I might also say thankful: thankful for the chance to apply, to be a contemplated (even momentarily) by accomplished scientists at early moments in our careers. Hopefully we’ve all shared stories with CEE that have moved them in some way.

But ask me again after the decisions.

Hypothetically, how would you all prepare for RSI? Last minute OCW lectures, hurried reviews of Pauling and Hawking, focused acquisition of theatrical performance? I ask this to understand your perspectives on encouraging innovation in research.

I totally wrote my essays four days before it was due. I didn’t hear about RSI until after I got my PSAT score and so a ton of it was rushed through. Definitely not a stroll in the park.

But I probably wouldn’t have prepared for it differently if I had known I would apply. I do what I do based on what I want to and have time to do at the moment. If I get lucky, what I end up doing helps me on my application.

I recommend other young people to use open Yale courses online and other (credible) resources on the Internet for exploring new stuff. AoPS has so many practice problems for AMC and such and doing some of those is just like doing puzzles for fun. Attending classes at a local university during the school year is also great. Where I come from there are several programs for that but my school is not always flexible with allowing you to finish high school material early unless you transferred here from somewhere else of a higher caliber.

I wish I had gotten started on my current science project early enough to talk more about it in my essays. I mentioned it but so much of it has changed and I’ve gotten very lucky with the outcome so far. I’m really glad my school was motivated enough to start supporting independent research (pretty rad about how I sort of inspired the whole deal). I would also get a different teacher to write one of my recs because I want a teacher who would focus more on me as a person versus me as a high scorer on standardized tests. Also I hope the other teacher remembers me well enough from a lecture room of 50 students. Maybe being one of the few girls in the class helps?

So wish I had started early and thought more carefully. Too late now. Bleh. I should be too busy to worry much. But it’s four a.m. and I can’t sleep due to all this stuff I have coming up in school this week. I gotta focus on other things and just gonna wait for that rejection to slide itself into my inbox.

tl;dr:
Me ranting. Not sleeping. Bleh.

Stuff I wish I had done:
-A science project
-Not procrastinated on my essays
-Made AIME
-Went to AMSP the summer after 8th grade

In short, I wish I had more math/science accomplishments c:

I’m assuming rejection. I need to come to terms with it before it happens. If I got in by some miracle, then I’ll be ecstatic. However, I’m not counting on it. Good luck guys!

I really hope decisions are released this week. Better to hear sooner rather than later.

Alas, I think I’m waiting for Godot, and if any of you know how that ends, you might be feeling the same…

boy, is this going to be a long four days…
if anyone is in need of dark source material for a poem, here’s some pretty depressing stuff:

Before notifications come out, let’s build a list like they did in previous years, get an idea for the spreads/distributions

The link was pretty depressing, but the notion they are sending rejections made me smile: in batches…

I’m sure most of us will be able to relate once we hear our decisions.

Decisions are out.

Rejected from TX. The email is from “Jackie Ortiz”. I’m handling this surprisingly well, as I saw it coming already. I just wasn’t impressive enough, I guess.

yay rejection letters.

not too devastated; it was bound to happen

TX here

DS received rejection e-mail this morning.

Rejected from CA.

Rejected, Ohio.
