Rsi 2013

Anyone know how to send “official” SAT scores? I’m not showing RSI my math section score on pain of torture T_T and my counselor told me to report it through CollegeBoard’s score reporting service .-.

Are you sure you can do that? I almost think they’d throw out your application if you didn’t send in a math score, only your verbal and writing… and I just copied the score report they sent to my house. I sent in PSAT so I just copied the school copy of my scores and had my counselor attach it into my official transcripts.

WHICH REMINDS ME

Even though the semester is not over, should our transcript show at least the names of our current courses? Mine just shows through the end of last year. Or I could just include it on my accomplishments sheet so that they still see it…

@shinexalive: see post #63 in this thread (on page 5) for how I sent “official” copies of my score reports last year. I doubt it would be possible to send Critical Reading + Writing without showing Math.

@WeIsCool: I asked the the transcript person at my school to include a list of my current year classes in the envelope with my transcript.

@LuoSciOly, thanks! I’ll try to get on that

@LuoScioly, @WeIsCool: LOL sorry guys xD I meant the math section on my PSAT. That’s what I’m not showing on pain of torture.

and @LuoSciOly, Thanks! I see how that works  I’ll give it a shot~

(My guidance office is so old fashioned ugh)

When do you guys plan on sending your applications in? LOL have to finish mine first…

Mine’s not arriving before 1/11 lol. such a tight schedule, but my prof is in Canada and will do them over break >_<

I was planning on sending mine right after christmas. and TASP has to get done too.

Hello Everyone,

I am going to ask about International RSI Scholars. I know that A LOT of domestic RSI participants are offered admission to MIT. However, recently I read a thread on CC and it was saying a lot of International Scholars were denied admission, unlike domestic participants. Is that true? If so, what is the reason? Both the domestic and the international participant should be extremely qualified to make it to the RSI… Is it because that they performed poorly as they weren’t proficient enough in English?

@toughman - I’m not sure if that’s true or not (it may just be a rant by a few rejects - don’t base your judgement on a few CC’ers), but if anything, MIT does accept fewer international applicants in general. The majority of their students are from the US. Also, not every RSI participant, even domestic ones, apply or get in to MIT. I do not think that this is a large problem, and that in general, RSI gives anybody a great experience that colleges will love.

The answer would relate to the difference between domestic and international selection at MIT. MIT has around 1,000 domestic spots in each class but fewer than 150 international spots. Thus, international admission to MIT is more competitive than domestic admission. You may be interested to see some statistics: [Admissions Statistics | MIT Admissions](Admissions statistics | MIT Admissions)

You’ll see that the international acceptance rate is less than 3.3% but the domestic acceptance rate is around 10.8%. MIT has to reject a LOT of very qualified international students every year. The rate is not necessarily lower because of differences in English proficiency (though I suppose this could be a small part of the explanation); it’s just because of the low amount of spots allotted to international students by the MIT administration. Thus, some international RSI students get rejected simply because the process is more competitive and difficult for internationals. But a lot of international RSI students get accepted to MIT too.

I hope this answers your question.

I am so very confused about this application. What is an unofficial high school transcript? How can my school send an official score report of my test scores? Doesn’t the College Board need to do this?

Does my school have to send my transcript and test scores separately? Please, someone help me.

@megalomaniac7: please see post #63 in this thread (on page 5) regarding “official” and “unofficial” test scores.

For an “unofficial” transcript, I simply printed off a copy from the online gradebook and included that with the rest of my application.

Does anyone know if the science teacher who is writing the rec letter needs to be a current teacher, or if a past teacher who knows me well is also acceptable?

@ojeshsh: A past teacher is perfectly fine.

Can some alumni post their stats/ranges, ECs that got them into this fabulous program? Thanks.

Ok, so one of my recommenders now lives in a different state than me. Should I ask her to just send in her recommendation to the CEE directly or send it to me (upon which I could send everything together to RSI)? I have doubts about the latter working due to the timeframe involved.

@leatherlibrarian, maybe just have her send it to RSI directly. Make sure she puts your name on it though haha

@Arabie if you look at previous posts or even previous RSI threads there are a lot of alums who posted their stats, just have to hunt them down. I don’t think a lot of alums lurk on these forums anymore, many from previous years are in college :D

OH important question: I’ve taken courses at Brookdale Community College (2 Compsci courses) and 2 courses at Rutgers University, Expository Writing and Public Speaking. Should I have them send my official and unofficial transcripts to MIT??? – got A’s in everything except a B in expos :(

I really have no “out-of-school” achievements (even for USCHO and ACSL and AMCs, I’ve just been a “school winner”) so should I really focus on my aspirations for research and interests in computer science/ engineering? Right now I’m in a program at my high school where we have a year-long junior research project and I’m working on artificial intelligence (specifically computer vision). Should I really focus on and sell this part?

-- Again I feel like I’m only great (achievements-wise) in my school, not the world, especially since I haven’t actually won USACO or ACSL, even in our region…

Maybe Columbia SHP counts? I took Number Theory this year and under coursework I put College Number Theory down lol do you think that’s okay?
