Rsi 2013

@LuoSciOly or any other Rickoid can answer this question very well, I suppose.

How was life for International RSI Scholars? Were they living altogether with Domestic RSI participants? Were there same expectations for Internationals?

From the application page:

ā€œPlease also include a 1-2 page list of major academic and non-academic awards or accomplishments. Please submit this online, print and submit with the rest of the mailed application materials, and save for your files.ā€

How is this part of the application submitted?

^good question, any answer?

Hey guys I was wondering how we send scores to RSI. They don’t seem to have a code on CollegeBoard or ACT, so will they accept scores that are on transcripts?

It says to mail the complete set of application materials in an envelope large enough to accommodate an original unfolded application.

Do we just print each part of the application on a separate A4-sized paper?

Thanks!

@kquinn: use your best judgment - I think everything you said sounds fine (i.e. putting down your college courses in the coursework section and sending a college transcript).

@toughman: at RSI, everything is the same for internationals as for domestics. I became very close friends with a lot of internationals during the 6 weeks.

@Cordycepin: I’m sorry I can’t answer your question - the list of accomplishments was not a part of the application last year, so I can’t give you advice from experience. I would recommend calling or emailing Ms. Maite Ballestero if you have a question (I don’t know CEE’s holiday office hours, though).

@nkrish: please see post #63 in this thread (on page 5).

@covertcognomen: yes, print every part of the application on regular sized paper.

@Cordycepin I was wondering that too. I’ve searched everywhere but couldn’t find a place to submit that list online. I am just going to print it out and send it.

@LuoSciOly thank you!

If say one meets RSI’s ā€œ220/76 (math)ā€ requirement, but for the SAT (like 2200 or something). Is this still valid?

If somebody gets selected to attend RSI, who decides the research topic/question? Is it the student or a professor?

hey guys, i have a quick question:

i got a 220 on my PSAT (76 math, 78 CR, 66 W- i know its terrible) but i got a 2340 on my SAT (800 M/CR, 740 W)… should i send both or just my SAT? i know it says that i should at least show a 220 on my PSAT but i was wondering if it’s better if i leave it out

How many people apply to this each year? My number is like 5000 something…

Bump for the list of accomplishments? Anybody figured out how we submit it online?
… on an off topic, would Machine learning and Constrained Optimization be un-related enough for subfields? (CS and Applied math) I’m just looking over my app, and… yeah. :/

@kooshbag
Some schools (like mine) won’t even get the PSATs until after break; I also emailed Ms. Maite and she replied that we have a choice of sending any of the three: PSAT, SAT or ACT… So I’d feel free to leave it out.

Ohh okay, thanks kraxis

@Babolat1: the score ā€œcutoffsā€ are not cutoffs at all but just guidelines. Certainly if your SAT score is higher than the PSAT guideline x10, your scores are competitive enough. I know of people who got accepted with sub-2200 scores as well.

@covertcognomen: you will be assigned to a mentor by CEE/RSI based on your essays and indicated research fields. They do a great job of matching students up with mentors who are researching exactly what the student is interested in. Usually, your mentor will have a project already lined up for you, but there are occasions when a mentor gives the student considerable latitude in picking a project. My mentor told me the goal/overall framework of my project and some variables to start with, but it was up to me to flesh out the project and determine other variables to incorporate and test. This seemed like a common arrangement.

@kooshbag: as kraxis said, it’s completely up to you which test scores to send. Send whichever scores you think put you in the best light.

@fishy7988: I don’t think your account number indicates how many people are actually applying. The number I’ve heard quoted is something in the range of 1000-2000 applicants.

@kraxis: the research subfields are totally up to you; I wouldn’t be too worried about how related or un-related they are as long as you talked about them as distinct topics in your first essay.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! Hopefully everyone can take a well-earned break from applications for the holiday. :)

Merry Christmas everyone!

My holiday break consists of waiting on my letters of rec. Will have to mail out my app. on January 2nd.

Does anyone know how to uncheck the courses? For example, I accidentally checked ā€œregularā€ for linear algebra when I haven’t taken it yet. I’ve tried unchecking it on multiple computers with multiple browsers. Is anyone else having this problem? Thanks!

Does anybody know how to send PSAT scores? The only thing I can think of is making a photocopy. Quickstart doesn’t even have a print option for an unofficial score report.

You should probably contact Maite about the situation. If you don’t want to do that, then start a fresh application.

Unofficial scores can be photocopies or scanned documents @nkrish
