RSI 2020

Hey y’all,

RSI applications just opened up and I’m looking to apply this year (currently a junior). I’m looking for some feedback on my application and what I need to change/fix before the deadline. Thanks.

Extracurriculars:

  1. Student researcher at the University of Colorado working on macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy; published in papers and journals for multiple sources; will be writing a paper and presenting my work; will be submitting my research and prototype for the Google Science Fair and statewide science fairs.
  2. Intern at local optometry and ophthalmology practice; perform vision tests and analyze results and shadow surgeries; will be writing a paper and presenting my work.
  3. Self-researching about melanoma skin cancer and creating a prototype that helps show early symptoms of melanoma cancer; will be submitting my research and prototype for the Google Science Fair.
  4. Spring break weekend, I'm running a "Try Hockey for Free" program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (since I'm half Malaysian) because I want to give kids the opportunity to try hockey since they don't have the same privileges and advantages like I do here in the states.
  5. President/founder of my high school's USABO club; will be taking the qualifying exam this winter.
  6. Junior volunteer at Children's Hospital Colorado for ~4 years; greet and guide visitors, deliver gifts, food, and any other necessities to patients, and clean hospital lobbies and lounges.
  7. Starting goalie for my high school's varsity ice hockey team; have been playing hockey for ~12 years; travel and compete across the US and Canada year round (will list various awards that I've won).
  8. Compete nationally in piano and orchestral competitions (will list the awards that I've won); have been playing piano for ~12 years.
  9. Officer for my high school's National Honor Society (pretty straightforward).
  10. Member of my high school's Asian Cultural Alliance club.
  11. Tutor middle school and other high school students in math, biology, and chemistry once a week.

Based off of this I think that my test scores are definitely my weakness but can improve in all areas of my application. Depending on what my PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, and SAT II scores turn out to be, what would y’all critique and suggest doing about my test scores. Thank you for all your help and good like to those who are also applying!

You are a great applicant! I think your test scores look fine, I would not worry about them too much. They seem within range.

What kind of publications did you have? Peer reviewed? Your test scores seem in the low end though.
