Hi. We will be driving from Richmond, VA to Ann Arbor, MI for our niece’s graduation. It looks like Rt 23 is the most direct way to drive between I-64 in Huntington, WVa and I-75 in Findlay, OH, but just worried about it’s size, speed limits, lights, etc. Does anyone familiar with that road have any advice? The interstates all appear to either undershoot or overshoot, but if more miles means a quicker trip, that’s our goal. We will be driving there, attending the ceremonies, and driving right back.
Thanks for any help!

I’ve driven Rt 23 many times from Columbus to Findlay. It’s very easy to travel. It’s a four lane highway the entire way. As you get near to Columbus it has stoplights but they are very easy and you seem to travel at a good rate.

I don’t remember driving Rt 23 from Columbus to Huntington but even if it’s not a divided highway it will be the best route to get to I 75.

Just a word of caution, obey the speed limits in Ohio. They are very strict. I once many years ago was picked up twice on 23 in one night!

Once you get to MI though, all bets are off. But you’ll only be in MI for 40 mins or so! Have a great time in Ann Arbor. It’s a great little town.

Sorry to hijack, but deb–would you happen to know anything about US 35 in Ohio? Cutting from I-64 just west of Charleston, WV up to I-71? Eventual destination is Oxford, OH.

MyLB, I’m sorry I don’t have any knowledge of US 35. Looking on mapquest though it looks like US 35 is a four lane highway, some of which are traditional interstate and some are just a divided four lane highway. It looks like it wouldn’t be a problem. I’ve only been to Oxford once, it’s really not that far off the highway.

Ohio is pretty easy to get around. The roads are well maintained. Compared to Michigan, Ohio roads are much better maintained.

Roger all that–thanks!

deb922, thanks so much for the info! I knew I could count on CC for help! It sounds like we will go Rt 23, watching the speed limits. I’ve never been to MI, so I will get to add a state to my list!

sewbusy - we drive from Columbus to northern MI on Rt 23 every summer. deb922’s description applies north of Findlay as well. one thing to be aware of: in much of Ohio, this is not a limited access highway, meaning there are no on/off ramps; drivers can access the highway from intersecting roads controlled by stop-sign only. just be cautious as sometimes people pull out either to cross the highway or to turn onto it, and don’t accelerate as fast as they should.

PRJ, your description was much better than mine!

For those on the east coast, people move over into the left lane as cars are merging onto the highway. People also expect cars to give them room to merge and will pull out into traffic. When we drive on the east coast, we are always amazed that no one lets you on the expressway.

We just drove it a couple of weeks ago en route from Toledo to Columbus for a wedding. Nice road, lots of farms, getting to be quite pretty as everything greens up. Drove 65-70 on a Saturday am, not much traffic, no worries.
