Apparently Notre Dame used to have a rugby team, which was then banned after some bad behavior. Subsequently, some Notrre Dame students played on a club rugby team - the South Bend Old Boys Rugby Club - that practiced on campus but played its games elsewhere.
Does anyone know if Notre Dame currently has a rugby team, perhaps at the “club” level? If not, do Notre Dame students frequently play on any particular South Bend rugby team?

Ive heard about a rugby intramurals team. I dont know much else about it though.

I have no idea so I will bump

I’ve only heard rumors about a team. I know the following…there is no sanctioned Notre Dame Rugby student club, nor is Rugby a club sport sanctioned by the university. From all that I’ve heard of rumors, they did some pretty “impressive” things in order to get their club status revoked.

I think your only option would be to practice off-campus…and likely will be playing with townies…

Notre Dame’s rugby team was recently re-instated at the end of the 2007 academic year. I attended and played for the “South Bend Old Boys” from 2001-2005, which was the name the club went as while it was banned from the university. However, the team got a good reputation back and will now wear the monogram ND on their uniforms—i believe Chris Harrington is upcoming captain, and if anyone wants to contact him, let me know.

just curious–what “impressive” tihngs did they do to get their club status revoked! lol

How competitive are the intramural sports in general–particularly basketball and soccer? Would it be unusual for somebody who hadn’t played those sports at the varsity level in hs to play them at ND?

Basketball is highly competitive. Your dorm will probably have an A team, a B team and even a C team. So there are varying levels of skill. Bookstore basketball, as I have pointed out before, is probably the most competitive sport, as such most teams that don’t practice and aren’t serious will be eliminated quickly. There was one team I saw last year that had a coach in a suit on the sideline. As for soccer, I don’t know, it’s a communist sport.

I was told that the “impressive” things included the selling of the team van for beer money. That, of course, is just a rumor.

Hello everyone
I play rugby at Notre Dame. We were reinstated in May 2007. We went 8-1-1 last fall with our only loss to MArquette and our only draw was with UofIllinois. These matches were played over labor day weekend at a tournament in Marquette - as such, we sent an unofficial side… after that tournament we dominated… we are members of the CARFU league and in five matches we outscored our opponents 243-3 including a 85-0 dismantling of Depaul and a 65-3 win over NOrthwestern…however, as it was our first year in the league, we were on probation and not allowed to compete in the playoffs (NOrthwestern represented CARFU). For the SPring Season, we will be Division I and thus far, we have confirmed matches against Indiana, Purdue, MIchigan, and Ohio State…

we also have a page on wikipedia… search Notre Dame Rugby and you should find it…

I am a Communist.

well I guess soccer is the thing for you.

(And just buying beer probably wouldn’t be worthy of complete dismantling of the team. It was worse than that, but I won’t write here.)

I’ve been admitted and am considering ND. One major part of my college decision will be the rugby program.

ND’s program is up and coming. They just hired Sean O’Leary, who is the USA Under-17 national team coach, as their head coach. Are there many national team or select side players who’ve joined the program? I know Coach O’Leary is a great coach, and this could draw many good players. I’m a select side player myself, and I’m strongly considering ND as I’m looking for a serious rugby club program (something which my other choice, Texas, does not have).

Can anyone tell me if this is the direction ND rugby is going?

We are unable to recruit because we are only a club team… however, this spring we will be playing a Division I schedule and will remain Division I… we continue to get more and more alumni support, as well as support from the board of trustees and other members of the administration… Yes, Coach O’leary is fantastic and in the last few weeks of our fall season, he made a huge difference and our team became more productive and efficient… we have great talent, and great potential to contend in the near future with Cal, BYU, and Navy… our first meeting of the spring is tonight; i will give you a more detailed evaluation later on

With regard to where we stand as a club, the team has dominated it’s DII opponents and is moving up to DI. We just hired Coach O’Leary and have a significant endowment so we are one of the best coached and well funded teams in the country. As far as quality of players, we have 3 players from the freshman class playing for the U19s and a number more coming in from the U17s and U18s. The LAU select side is made up almost entirely of players from our first 15. If you have any further questions feel free to ask.
