Rush

If your child rushes and doesn’t get into a fraternity, is it acceptable to try again or should I discourage him.Is second semester sophmore year getting too late to try and join?

The answer is going to be “it depends.” On the school, on the specific fraternities, and so on. Does his school have sophomore rush, or freshman? Why didn’t he get in? Did he rush only one house that has more applicants than they can accept? Are there other houses he would like if he had an open mind? What is he hoping to get out of joining? Does he know and like guys at any other house? Can he hang out with them and become a known–and liked–quantity?

According to my S, sometimes guys don’t get a bid from a specific house because no one knows them well enough to advocate for them. Sometimes it is because a few people actively dislike them and ding them. But his school delayed rush until sophomore year, so people had the opportunity to get to know the brothers.

Second semester sophomore year is not too late. My son’s frat lets juniors join.

My best advice to him would be as the previous poster said, try to get to know some of the brothers, without being annoying.

Thank you, I will pass on the information
