Rushing a Fraternity Sophomore Year

I am a freshman at ASU and was rushing a cultural-based frat as well as an IFC frat. I got a bid from the cultural-based frat and accepted it, but somewhat feel as if this frat will not be good for me. I did not get a bid from the IFC frat because I stopped rushing their frat halfway through rush week. However, I feel as if this IFC frat would have been a better fit for me. Is it okay to rush the same frat again the following semester? What are my chances? Will it be awkward? Any advice on how to increases my chances on getting a bid? This IFC frat just got back on campus Fall 2017.

If you have already been initiated into the cultural-based fraternity, you cannot join a different fraternity. If your fraternity has a pledging process instead of new member education, you can drop the fraternity and rush again next year. You can rush again next year and have a shot of getting into that fraternity, but keep in mind that they may not want you and then you arent in either two of the fraternities you liked.

As said above, if you’ve already been initiated into the cultural based frat, you can’t join the IFC one. You can certainly drop out of the cultural one, but it’s an unwritten rule that IFC orgs do not bid people who have been initiated into another org.

If you are just a pledge, then you could receive a bid, but be ready to explain why you didn’t even finish rushing the IFC org (you could have always turned down the bid), and why has your mind changed? Also, be ready to address the obvious question of why the IFC org should trust you won’t change your mind again and drop out of their pledge class?

I actually think this is a written rule. I know it is in the NPC and NPHC, and I’m pretty sure it is in NIC/IFC as well 0 if you are an initiated brother of a fraternity, you can’t join another NIC fraternity unless you are granted a release by the national HQ. Many cultural fraternities are members of the NIC as well (four of the NPHC fraternities are, as are many of the Asian interest fraternities).

Assuming that you still can rush (if you just accepted a bid but were not initiated as a brother), then yes, it likely will be awkward. You’ll have to have really good reasons for why you dropped and they may not be inclined to accept you again. It may be a good idea to develop relationships with some people in the chapter - particularly anyone who was in the pledge class you were/would have been in - and try to get them as your advocate.
