Rushing as a Junior who might study abroad - are my chances hurt?

So long story short, I transferred after my freshman year to a new school.

I’m happy about transferring to this new school academically, but I’ve been absolutely miserable socially here. The few friends I have here have been hanging out multiple times here without me, I recently found out, and I spent way, way, way too many nights here lonely and bored out of my mind and by myself.

I mean, my reasons are deeper than just that, but at this moment there’s almost nothing I want to do more here to improve my social life than join a frat. In many ways it’s a last resort but I don’t even want to imagine what will happen if I don’t get into one.

So I know that rushing as a Junior next fall (albeit one that’s only been here for a year) and one who will probably study abroad the next semester after that, my chances might be a little damaged. I’ve talked to one guy and he said I don’t have anything to worry about because his frat (at a different school) has let in juniors before.

Also I realize this won’t happen for at least 5 more months, but I’m so hopelessly lonely here (believe me, I try) that all I can do at times is project myself into the future.

Anyway, I’m looking for reassurance, partially, and I’m also wondering if I should rush more than one frat to increase my chances. That’s just kind of risky because, at least for Spring rush this year, all the frats held their events at the exact same time on the same nights - that is, they all had open events at 9 on Mon, Tue, Wed, and usually by Thursday or Friday it was invite-only.

thanks guys!

I don’t know. Depends on how badly you want to study abroad.

I’m abroad right now. It’s fun but I don’t know if you can “run from your problems” - you problems follow you everywhere, ya know?

That said, you can definitely start over socially abroad, but nothing here will last of course. I do know one guy here who seems really glad he’s in a new environment - he “doesn’t miss home at all.” But it’s a temp fix and if you want to make better friendships it might be easier to do so staying on campus?

Up to you.

I say study abroad despite whether or not your chances in the frat are hurt or not. Studying abroad is once in a lifetime, and I had an amazing time when I did it, and if I were in the position to, I would do it again.
You might make a lot of friends when you do study abroad and choose to extend your time there (my college allowed up to two consecutive years abroad).
