<p>Since many are eating a bird today, why not a story on another kind of bird. I have to admit I am glad the woman was fired, but I was surprised that Russians even knew the meaning of flipping the bird. I always considered the middle finger to be a truly American gesture arising from the pleasantries of American driving, but I guess Russians have bad driver’s too.</p>

<p>No, flipping the middle finger as an obscene hand gesture goes back at least as far as the ancient Greeks, whose term for it was “katapugon” (a reference to the buttocks). Fast forward a few hundred years and there are records of ancient Roman senators using this gesture during debates to express contempt for what the speaking senator was saying. I think it was used in Europe in medieval times too.</p>
