These are my two choices for college at the moment. My heart is set on UMD because I really like the campus and atmosphere, but my parents are leaning towards Rutgers. This is mainly because of my mental health, which hasn’t been good recently, and they worry that UMD is too far from home. I don’t mind Rutgers (in fact i like the place) but I would much rather prefer going to UMD. Thoughts?
If you are a New Jersey resident, Rutgers will likely cost less, which may affect your parents’ preference.
If your mental health is shaky, staying closer to your family and to your mental health care team can be the best choice to make. You don’t need to make a decision yet, so you have time to discuss your options with your care team and with your parents.

I agree with the above replies. Never underestimate the benefit of being close to home if you have mental health issues or stress. Parents probably are thinking about that more than you are and about the lower costs for a NJ in-state resident. Good luck deciding

Rutgers is cheaper. If you have to withdraw because of your mental health, having to do it at in -state prices is better (you could medically withdraw and not have to pay tuition, but you do have to pay for room/board).

If you need help, your parents are closer to be able to help out.
My DD has anxiety, and she picked a college an hour a way because of these reasons. It has worked out well and I have had to help her from time to time.
