Rutgers NB vs Pitt vs Stony Brook for future career in Healthcare/Physical Therapy

He is torn between direct admit DPT at Quinnipiac or 4 years first at Rutgers or Pitt or SB. The bummer of Quinnipiac is that there is no pool and campus is smaller. However, it’s direct admit to DPT program that he wants.

Can you go to an admitted student program at QU and (while you are there) try to scope out swimming options? Maybe contact the college’s Recreation Dept. and ask what students do?

Thank you for clarifying.

I agree that attending an accepted students day might help sort things out for him.

Yes, we have scheduled admitted student day on 3/23 for SB, 4/7 for QU and 4/13 for Rutgers. We actually did ask about pool last time when we were at QU. The campus tour guide is also a HS swimmer and she said it’s a bummer for her too and confirmed there is no pool option there. I asked in QU parent group as well and confirmed the same. He won’t have access to pool if he doesn’t have a car. A current QU mom is nice enough to tell us that she will have her daughter who also swims to start a swim club at QU next year so maybe they can figure out transportation to go together to the public pool at high school near QU. There is a fee to use it but not expensive.

It sounds like there is a possible solution to the pool problem. Does he still feel that the campus is too small (he may not know until he revisits)?

We will see after visiting SB on 3/23 and how he feels about the campus size and vibe. My impression is that he likes mid to large size school the best. He likes Pitt when we toured. He also likes RIT campus over U of Rochester when we toured. So I think his sweet spot is around size of 20k students. Both Pitt and SB meet the criteria. It will also depend how determined he is on PT. He did express a doubt lately but I think it’s more due to decision making anxiety. However, we don’t want to limit him. If he has doubt, then he has option to go to 4 years university with potential for him to explore in the fields he may like and flexibility of changing majors. As the only child, we will be able to support him financially no matter which way he chooses.

Suprise popped out over the weekend. My son got accepted by Case Western after deferred from EA and received University Scholarship which makes COA is lower than Pitt. How does Case Western compare to Pitt? I know both have great medical resources and research opportunities. Case probably will have better academic support than Pitt.

Congrats to him.

I would start with - the schools are very diffferent - size, (ACC) sports, etc. - and with Pitt having CMU and other schools as neighbors/close by, etc.

There’s no wrong choice here. Yes, CWRU is private - that doesn’t always mean what you imply but sometimes it does. You might talk to a student ambassador or research more into academic support.

But what environment (that you can afford) would your student be most comfortable?

Where they are happiest will be where is better for them.

Congrats and good luck.

Congrats on another great offer! I would speak to current students and try to gain information about student support, resources etc.

Case will have more resources per student and is right in the middle of University Circle, a hospital&medical research area (and a booming, hopping neighborhood). Pitt’s student: faculty is good for a public university (14:1) but pales compared to Case’s 9:1. And if Case is cheaper… I don’t see the downside.

I would say CWRU is more similar to Carnegie Mellon than Pitt. Similar size, about half the students are graduate students, and maybe more flexible with majors than Pitt. Both Pitt and CWRU would give your child a lot of opportunities for shadowing. It’s my belief that it’s the student who guides the experience more than the school. Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology etc. are pretty much the same regardless of where it is taught. I would guess the resources at either school would be great. I think it comes down to where did he feel comfortable when visited? Once there it’s up to him to create the best experience.
