Rutgers Staff and Departments

Am I the only one around here that has had bad experience with almost every part of rutgers I deal with? From student accounts to housing even the chemistry secretaries. They are all extremely rude and really unhelpful from my experiences. I’m starting to wonder if it’s just because I’m out of state or is everyone getting this treatment. A good half of the staff needs to be cleared out and replaced in my opinion. When I started I had to struggle to get my NETID because no one knew anything and was constantly sent to another part of rutgers. Now with housing I was told I don’t know for a good ten minutes on whether I would get housing from the housing wait list. Just ridiculous.

Anyone have a suggestions how to avoid this? I’m extremely nice even when they are rude.

Welcome to Rutgers, my friend!

Make sure you are phrasing your request as simply as possible. Don’t go into a lot of history or long-winded explanations, for ex., just say: “I don’t have a NetID, what should I do?” let them ask the questions rather than trying to anticipate what info they need.

A lot of times you will get a student who answers the phone first. If they cannot answer your question, ask to speak to a supervisor or just someone else. Ask for names and write them down.

The problem is, Rutgers is huge. Lots of departments, and lots of unaccountable phone answerers. You have to be patient. Many times, I just start with the general Rutgers help line. A student will answer and direct your call; try to get an extension number in case you are disconnected. I guess I have been lucky because I have usually been directed properly when I call the Rutgers info number.

Regarding housing: imo this is the most difficult department to deal with. No one seems to know what is going on, and you will get different answers.

Let me try answering your housing question: if you are currently on a waitlist, you may not get housing immediately, but you will, at some point this semester, be assigned housing. Housing says every year that it takes time, but eventually everyone is accommodated. I don’t see why that would suddenly change this year. There is also a Rutgers Housing Assignments page on FB. Try asking your question there as well.

Remember, because Rutgers is huge, things move more slowly than you might like. Try not to let it get to you or you will go crazy.

Great suggestions, great post. Thank you I will definitely try to take your advice.

Faculty hate dealing with students who ask similar questions but yet they still have not made a way to help answer questions for students and ask students to come into their office.

Well, to be fair to the faculty, lots of students don’t listen and ask repetitive questions. In a room of 100 people, that must get old quickly.

My son has never had a problem going to office hours when he has a problem or question. Most of the professors have been very supportive and helpful. (There was maybe one who was not that helpful). I highly recommend office hours for those who have questions that are not answered during class. So few people take advantage of this that I think it gets you bonus points because the instructor knows you are trying.

Yeah my professors were usually good without going to office hours I might not have gotten a 4.0 last semester.

Housing told me today that there is no spaces currently and I am not guaranteed housing. I can’t get past the secs so I’m just going to have one of my parents call and try to get to someone higher up. I tried myself but they brushed me off. They told me that they would forward my email lol never happened.

Quite a storm I concocted for myself and I only have myself to blame!

I’ve had no major problems with Rutgers staff so far, at least when I’ve emailed people. They’ve all been very nice to me and relatively quick with their responses even though it does take a long time for them to handle stuff like housing and term bills. Yes, I’m out of state.

They probably can’t say ‘we guarantee you housing’ but you’ll still probably get it if you’re on a waitlist. People are dropping out all the time.

Yeah as far as emailing everything has been solid except Housing and the Physics department lol. Yeah it’s just a pain that they told me to deny it if I really didnt want my first offer then they tell me that I shouldve accepted it and its my fault, which it is but still they gave the advice. It’s just inconvenient, but then what isn’t, I didn’t have any control over the housing situation because I wasn’t planning on returning until some stuff went on at home.

for physics deptartment you might want to contact [Rutgers Physics: Stacey Jacobs - directory page](<a href=“Rutgers University Department of Physics and Astronomy”>Rutgers University Department of Physics and Astronomy)

she is very helpful from what i hear.

Housing, if you are on waitlist people always drop housing or get kicked out for some stupid reason. They are singles on campus that are saved for emergency housing in a situation that they need to transfer a student into a new room. Thats why some people can’t find housing. However, if you don’t want to be on waiting list, try off-campus housing on college ave especially if you don’t want to commute.

It may be 500+ a month with not the best options available for single room or shared room since its late in the off campus housing game.

Scienceguy actually got housing yesterday. go figure.

Yeah the physics dept was just an example, stacy jacobs = no fun on the phone but extremely kind in person.

The Housing department was nice enough to give me a follow up call because the woman that had gave me my first housing slot had recognized today that I was from California so she offered me a spot in the Easton Ave apts so I wouldnt have to go home on breaks. Extremely nice. She also said she would keep me updated if a single or anything more appropriate came up. I turned down Easton Ave just for the pure fact that I’d rather be in Clothier than be near bars and far from the library and dining hall. I’ve grown out of drinking already and I turn 21 in a couple weeks…
