Rutgers University NB Disability program - how good is it for ADHD/MDD student

Hi, DS got into CS program and I want to ask how good the support program is at Rutgers NB. Any suggestions from students or parents with direct experience? I know he might be eligible for extended time for assignments and tests since he currently has one. We are also looking if he can get classes closer to dorm; smaller classes(that might be hard); and probably a coach to work on executive functioning skills.
Also, to be taking bus for classes is making me nervous since it adds extra step for him to manage (or not manage). Pls help. We have to commit by May 1st. He also has other options(Uconn, UBing) but we want him closer to home(Rutgers, Drew, Seton Hall).

I don’t know anything about Rutgers and accommodations, but my son just committed and and very nervous. My 23 year old went to TCNJ because he is medicated for ADHD and Rutgers seemed too overwhelming. From what I’ve read, most colleges don’t seem to help much, students get letters to give professors. My son never needed quiet spots or extra time for test taking so we never got him a 504 in high school. My oldest went to Rutgers, loved it, but explained to her younger siblings that it’s all on them, no one spoon feeds you there, everything is done in your own, you could be dead and no one would know. Unfortunately my 18 year old son who doesn’t have ADHD acts like he does since online schooling, I can’t remember the last assignment he turned in on time, and we are on him about the various things he needs to do on the Rutgers portal.

Thanks Mjkacmom!

Can I ask how it went? My son love Rutgers but my concerns are all the same things you listed.

Well… he ended up withdrawing in October 2021 with a pretty bad mental breakdown, not caused by Rutgers (although he only had one in person class that semester). Fortunately is suspected something besides senoritis was going on and took out tuition insurance. He enrolled at Montclair fall of 2022 after getting some therapy and meds, he had a neuropsychological evaluation and signed up with disability services for accommodations (which he’s never used but nice to know they are there). Definitely have your student get in touch, he will need documentation and they will have a meeting (parents aren’t usually invited) to go over it all. Find out all resources available, study centers, tutors etc. before classes even start, get extra help before it’s needed (instead of trying to find a calculus tutor after midterms), go to office hours, study groups, meet with TA’s. I knew Rutgers wasn’t the tight choice for my son, but his issues weren’t adhd, there was really no other options but to leave (I love to be right but would’ve loved to have been wrong). I haven’t heard great thinks about mental health services at Rutgers, and know they are completely overwhelmed everywhere.

Thank you. I hope your kiddo is getting it all straightened out and it didn’t do a number on his self esteem. My son does have acceptances at some places that have really specific learning disability programs so maybe those will have to move up the list (it can’t all be about the sports teams!)

Thanks to all who contributed so candidly to this thread. Incredibly helpful. My child has ADHD and was admitted to Rutgers NB. Many of my concerns were addressed and validated here. Of course every child is different but these points really resonated.

I also have an ADD and dyslexia kid who is heading college this Fall. Same concern with Rutgers and he is also afraid of spreading campus will be too overwhelming for him. Also being a big state flagship, overall lack of advising can also a red flag for him. Even we really want to like Rutgers, we may go for school that is less than 20k for undergrad.
