Rutgers vs . Rice vs. Rensaeller Poly vs Virginia tech

Which universities one should choose for grad electrical engineering if one got selected in all of these? Weather or tuition costs is not an issue but academic quality is.

RPI . Why? Because I know more about it in comparison to the others in the list. I also see that many firms hire from RPI in NY state. Rice is good too.

I would go to Rice personally b/c I heard the campus is really nice and it has a lot of prestige in all fields, including EE.

Don’t know about RPI or VT but at Rutgers engineering you will spend your first two years in large lecture hall classes being taught by TA’s who do not have a good command of the English language. In other words, Rutgers offers a very traditional large school engineering education. And even if you are a self learner, plan on spending 5 years there.

toblin: He’s talking about graduate school, so he’d be more likely to be the TA.

If tuition costs are not an issue, don’t go to Rutgers. I would presume most people end up here for financial reasions (and disclaimer: still love it), but the other schools you mentioned are better academically (or at least ranked better; better is a subjective term).

It really depends on what you want to do in electrical engineering. VT I know offers a lot of variety in terms of classes/research since it has one of the largest EE/CPE faculty in the nation.

When it comes down to grad school in engineering, it isn’t about the classes, but more about research and gaining a deeper understanding of a particular field within the major.

Below is an article about some of the research topics being addressed at Virginia Tech in their ECE department.

If you get accepted to Rice, I can put you in touch with my brother, who’s a grad student in electrical engineering there (and also the new manager of Valhalla, the grad student bar). Let me know.

Thanks aibarr, I have been accepted into Purdue and GAtech, Rutgers, and U Missouri Columbia. However I am yet to decide between Purdue and Gatech obviously.
