I am an international student who applied for the Philosophy (MA) in St. Andrews this year.
I have received an e-mail that asked me to upload my transcripts through the portal, and I find that the status has changed to “checking application”
I wonder whether it is a good signal for me, and how long will it take me to receive the result.

At least last cycle it seemed to mean your application was complete and ready to go to the decision makers for that course. As such it was not a good or bad sign, it just meant there was nothing else for you to do but wait.
As an aside, to me “Checking application” does seem like a strange way to put this, but it apparently means the same thing as “Reviewing application”, or something like that.
Anyway, the timing from that point to an actual decision seemed to be variable. One of the variables appeared to be your course. It may also depend on whether you are International or UK, and if International which country, although I am not sure that has really been confirmed. But at least in the US, there was a notion they tried to get offers out to US applicants pretty fast, because they knew they might be getting way out ahead of a lot of other offers that way.

Mine says checking application too but it also still shows that I can upload my documents they requested, even though my school sent it last week. Does yours show that too?
Unfortunately my S24 applied last year, so I am going off memory of what his portal said, and what we discussed with others last year.
