Sacramento DJs - boundless stupidity

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/01/18/MNGMMNKOHS1.DTL

This is a terribly sad story. Also, we talk a lot about the dangers of alcohol poisoning, but it’s important to talk to our kids about the dangers of water intoxication.

coronax2, that fraternity hazing was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the recent article.

A 5-minute audio transcript of relevant parts of the morning show can be found on the Sacramento Bee website (link below). Callers are talking with the DJs about water intoxication and its ability to kill, and the DJs repeatedly say they know, but the participants “signed waivers” so they aren’t responsible. (Unfortunately the audio clip requires a (free) sign-up, but I wanted to hear the tape excerpts so I signed up this morning.) Absolutely appalling and tragic.

(Before the contest, the female DJ says, “Can’t you get water poisoning and, like, DIE?” How terrible that cooler heads didn’t prevail.)
(EDIT: She also, tellingly, says, “Maybe we should have researched this more…” Like… YEAH.)

There are lawsuits underway, apparently. I generally get irritated by nuisance lawsuits, but this is one I will support. This never, never should have happened, and it should never happen again.

Besides the fact that this contest was a stupid and dangerous idea, I can’t believe that the DJ in the room with the participants let this continue. Obviously people fainting, vomiting, shivering, and acting intoxicated isn’t healthy. I mean, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that maybe something’s wrong. After notifying the other DJs, at least one of them should have taken charge of the situation.

My d was always lectured about water poisoning by her tumbling coaches. They encouraged water breaks at the fountains, but would yell at the girls if they started guzzling big bottles of water. In fact, ldgirl once made herself pretty sick by drinking too much water too fast during a tumbling practice. She had similar symptoms…her head started hurting suddenly and she became very nauseous and light-headed…and I had to take her home because she couldn’t function. Obviously, she didn’t drink enough to create a fatal electrolyte imbalance, but she definitely made herself ill.

A couple of overgrown fraternity boys and a sorority girl with a radio show do something moronic and this surprises us? I suspect that their comments will lead to a big, FAT, settlement LONG before this reaches court. And it’s not impossible that they will be charge with some form of manslaughter or negligent homicide. I say “good.” That they would KNOW this sort of thing could lead to death and keep going with it is absolutely beyond comprehension. They were playing with people’s lives, presuming that everything would turn out OK. Well, it didn’t, and there are now motherless children and a widower out there.

How irresponsible is it possible to be? What’s next? A alcohol drinking contest?
