Sad news from Paris - Notre Dame Cathedral is burning

Noooooo – the photos of the roof on fire turned my stomach. Has France not suffered enough in recent years.

One of the world’s great cultural, architectural and historical sites… now in flames… I just can’t wrap my mind around this…

my icon is a picture of one of the stained glass windows there.

Youngest kid was just there yesterday on a school tour…most of the interior is irreplaceable and supposedly there was artwork being stored inside.

A very bad year for Paris: weekly protests/riots, the St. Sulpice Church fire and now Notre Dame burning.

for those kids who were there yesterday, they will always remember being one of the last to see it . I hope it can be salvaged. I had been there a few years ago.

Thank you for fixing the thread title. Hard to see the screen of my phone through tears. :frowning:

I had to turn off the news. A terrible tragedy. To think of all the history makes me feel sick.

My heart is broken.

We were there last month, climbed the tower and saw the scaffolding for the repairs they were doing. So sad… wonder if there is any insurance on it.

I wonder if there are any craftsmen left who can do that kind of work anymore.

I wonder if it will be rebuilt as it was or replaced by some modern architecture. The pictures make it look like a total loss.

^We have very detailed information on the cathedral, apparently:

As for craftsmen, absolutely. The cost will be an issue, depending on how much damage is done.

The rebuilding could be an opportunity to train people in these almost lost crafts.

I just realized that Notre Dame was already 300 years old when St. Peter’s in Rome was built.

Whatever they do… we wont see it whole for decades.

I can’t watch the news coverage on TV. Too devastating. So glad I saw it in 1976, but was hoping to visit it again.

So sad.

And perhaps almost as sad is that I was relieved to hear that appears the fire started as a result of renovations (rather than it being an act of terrorism).

I’m so heartbroken for this beautiful landmark. I can’t watch the new coverage as it makes me cry.

I was just there this summer. So sad!

I’m so sad ?..
