Sad News: Hoff Theater to Close in January

This is sad news–I went to several movies at the Hoff freshman year, and though I haven’t used it as much since, it’s sad to see this cool aspect of our campus life disappear.

i know! its just so sad, my friend is working there, and they’re trying to drum up interest to keep hoff going, but unless they get a HUGE increase in numbers, Hoff will cease to exist as we know it :(

I think one thing Hoff could do is market more. I NEVER see ads for the movies they show there except for right outside the theater. If they advertised, they would be more likely to pull in those “hey look what’s playing tonight…let’s go, it’s only a couple bucks” type of viewers. I know that’s how I saw Across the Universe, Snakes on a Plane, and the Departed there my freshman year.

my friend said they were hoping to, like handing out flyers at the diners of the shows that week, or something like that. I hope it works! And yeah, I totally agree, the only reason I know about whats going on at Hoff is cuz a friend works there, otherwise I would never check.

I think unfortunately, there is too much to do at UMD and that caused this to occur. Not only do you have frat parties, dorm parties, athletic games, but also DC a metro ride away with all of the options most kids would rather go to any of those instead of a movie.

I am so sorry to hear this. This activity is actually what led me to look into this school for my son. Well, learning a good lesson here. Don’t put too much into what activities are offered at a school. They can come and go. Sadly, you can also say that about majors. Look at Tulane with its engineering department.

The Hoff led you to the school? It really was a very small EC place. They still have and will have functions there, but now they will be rented out.

Not the Hoff specifically, but looking for a college that has son’s intended major, but also other majors that would interest him should he decide to switch. But also looking for a campus with a vibrant student life with activities for the non Greek and non sports kid. Hoff’s offerings of movies on campus gave a student an inexpensive form of entertainment without the need to take the metro into the city.

We haven’t applied yet, but still may. The academics sound too good to pass by for this school.

Off the subject, but does UMCP offer any kind of scholarships for OOS that are NMF? As it has such a great rep on its own merit, doubt it offers all the bells and whistles that Bama and Auburn do, but would be nice to get a bit of a break since we’re OOS.

DS got Presidential Merit and he is OOS and was NMF.

Thanks, bullet. What is the Presidential Merit?

Also, is your son in any of the honors programs?

Son will be majoring in biomedical engineering.

Thanks for your help.

Montegut,

We are OOS and there are major scholarships available at UMD. My son received the full Banneker/Key Award which includes, tuition, room & board (food), and books for four years. He even received a free i-Phone.

DS received a full ride to Bama too, along with many others. UMD was the BEST choice for a number of reasons, but mainly academics, opportunites, and location, location, location!

He is loving everything that UMD has to offer! I have never seen him so happy!

Our DS is like Jewel’s DS he absolutely loves the school. DS is in Govt and Politics for scholars, so he is on a different path than your child. He selected them because of interning in DC. He is also AFROTC scholarship, so the set was important.

The only thing DS is upset about regarding the school is the football team!

If your child is going biomed engineering, remind him there is a program called gemstone and to look into it!

Wow, congrats on the Banner schollie to Jewel.

Not to be crass, but what amount is the Presidential Merit?

Got to get writing those essays!

I know this has probably been covered, but does admission with a scholarship or one of the honors programs guarantee you housing? I’m sure housing is in short supply.

All B/K recipients are guaranteed housing for 4 years (and that’s relatively new. Started with my S’s class of B/K scholars). That’s the only guarantee I’m aware of. It seems most, if not all, freshman get housing. the problem is largely with juniors and seniors.

Max is right jr and sr housing is becoming a problem.

Presidential ranges, so it will depend on their stats.

What is the range for the Presidential?

Any little bit will help.

Here is something about the Presidential scholarship from the UMD website.
President’s Scholarship

The President’s Scholarship provides four-year awards to exceptional entering freshmen. Awards of up to $12,000 per year are available for four years. Recipients are identified through evaluation of the admission application materials. The criteria include academic achievement, results of standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and the essay.

I think Presidential is the one my daughter was offered, and the amount was $5000. But we’re in-state - maybe they offer higher amounts to OOS students?
