"How many illegal guns have been used in murders? Also, do you know that the guns here were legally held by the murderer? "

I can almost guarantee they were legally obtained.

"How many illegal guns have been used in murders? Also, do you know that the guns here were legally held by the murderer? "

I can almost guarantee they were legally obtained.

Apparently he killed his mother, the kindergarten teacher, and her ENTIRE CLASS of children. A relative has been found dead in a CT home, possibly in Newtown, and his brother was arrested, apparently outside the school. It is unknown why he was there, or at least the reason hasn’t been released.

I’m appalled that several news organizations put up articles about a Ryan Lanza from Hoboken and his Facebook page. Upon learning that this is a completely different person than the shooter, those organizations left the web pages up, complete with gigantic pictures of the (as far as we know) completely innocent person who happens to have the same name as the shooter. Tiny corrections at the bottom of a webpage don’t make up for giant wrong pictures at the top.

The President is making a statement, and I’m not sure he’ll even get through it. I’ve never seen him cry before. We’re all together in our sadness today.

Consolation…what news are you watching/listening to?

I know the media is craving information, but irresponsible reporting is just ridiculous. They need to wait for officails to give the press the correct information. Stop trying out report eachother…

This is just a horrible, horrible event. So much worse then I thought it was orginally this morning. My heart breaks for the parents, kids and teachers of the school.

I genuinely do not believe that. I believe “we” (and politicians) are cowed by the NRA and vocal minorities who say they will not vote for politicians who support gun control and spending on mental health issues. Nothing but our voices, votes, and political/financial support will change that. The majority of Americans do NOT own guns. Don’t be fooled by the count of guns out there… there are people like my ex-H who owns 44 (yes, we inventoried them for the divorce settlement) who skew the numbers. I even own a gun. But I have NO concern about any gun control legislation I have ever heard proposed. Just because people own a gun does NOT mean they oppose all gun control legislation.

Obama’s statement left me sobbing. I have no words.

I agree the president’s statement was touching.

There must be some danger years with young men, the Colorado movie theater shooter, the Oregon mall shooter, Columbine, Virginia Tech, all these insane young men.

Automatic and semiautomatic weapons should be illegal. They are not needed for hunting. There is no use for them other than to kill

Maybe we should only let women own guns. (And I am only a little bit kidding…).

NBC

President Obama could barely restrain himself from crying. In fact, he was wiping away tears.

Flags are ordered half-staff. This is just too sad.

Went into the lunch room for glass of water and had to walk out to get away from the TV.

I own a gun. It’s a 22 caliber target pistol. I was on my college’s varsity pistol team and hope to get back into competitive shooting some day. (secret fantasy is to make Olympic trials…I was that good in college)

That said, I see no reason why any individual needs to own an assault rifle. You can’t hunt with it and you can’t use it in competition. They need to be eliminated. I have never heard a cogent arguement that clearly articulates why a private citizen needs an AK-47. Anyone have one to offer?

Last night my community book club was discussing Defending Jacob. Talk about timing. Most of us have sons @ 25 y.o. Who aren’t too communicative. What turns a moody kid into an uncaring violent person? We still know so little about the Oregon killer; no one close to him saw signs he’d become a shooter.

Obama’s short speech was poignant. It is all so sad.

Intparent, I use to believe that but I don’t anymore. :(

intparent, I agree with every one of your posts on this thread.

This is the PERFECT day to have this conversation.

I’m tired of being told to shut up about gun control. Call your senators’ offices and your congressional representative. Express your beliefs to the person answering the phone, but don’t stop there. Ask to be put through to the appropriate legislative aide. Ask about the senator’s/representative’s position on this issue, and keep after him/her until you get an answer. Then ask what is being done about it. Then call back every week.

We are not outnumbered, we are the silent majority. We have to stop being silent.

I do wonder too. I cannot think of a single mass killing committed by a woman or a group of women. From 9/11 to Ft. Hood, to Beslan, Dunblane, the London subway bombings, the salon killings in Southern California last year, the McDonalds in San Ysidro years ago, the restaurant in Killeen, Texas, the Austin campus shooter, Columbine, the school shooting in Eugene, Oregon, Virginia Tech, the mass killing in the day trading site in Atlanta, the law firm in San Francisco, and on and on, all men.

Good grief, how could I forget Oklahoma City.

I don’t think this is the perfect day to have this conversation.
I think it’s the perfect day to mourn for lost children, lost innocence and parents who have lost their children.
