safeties for some top LACs

All the LACs ranked from 1 through roughly 32 in US News are just about similar in quality, the differences more in environment/culture than anything else. Furthermore, there are lowly-ranked schools like Reed, Earlham, Marlboro, St. Olaf and the College of the Atlantic that belong alongside the top ones.

DePauw, Earlham, Kalamazoo

collegeprep: “macalester doesn’t give better education than knox. macalester is not known for its rigor academics, it ranks high on the usnews ranking mainly because of its location.but carleton vs. knox is a whole different story.”

I’m curious to know what you think the primary differences are, academically, between Mac and Carleton. Thanks! :)

Union College (NY), Lafayette College.

You should definitely look at Dickinson, Goucher, and Kalamazoo. All of them have great study abroad programs, if that is something you are interested in. They try to emphasize a global/international understanding of your major by giving you the opportunity to get out in the world and experience it through internships and study abroad. You could also look at Wheaton College in MA. I have a friend who is going there next year.

rhodes, sewanee

I think this generalization might be too sweeping, but who knows. But could a similar thing not be said of the universities on US New’s list?

say amherst vs kenyon? very different in quality of education.

Maybe not that big a difference in the quality of education, but certainly a fairly large discrepancy in the academic accomplishments of the student body.

Goucher,Wheaton MA , Skidmore, have been mentioned already and are good choices for safeties–also look at Drew University --small with LAC feel and pretty campus located in a NJ suburb convenient to NYC.
