safeties for some top LACs

I am looking at quite a few LACs. The big ones are: Oberlin, Macalester, Vassar, and Carleton. Having seen a great deal of the seemingly well-qualified seniors from my high school, get rejected from such places, I have tried to find a bunch of safeties-schools that I could not only get into, but also I would be happy with. I visited a few of these places, and read about some of them, but basically still only have Clark in Worcester as place to apply. Can anyone think of schools with acceptance rates at least in the 60% range, that may posessess similar traits to those scools I previously mentioned? Maybe anyones I would not have thought to look at. Thanks a ton!!!

Anyone???

Franklin and Marshall, Whitman, Richmond, Grinnell, Lawrence, Reed

they all have acceptance rates of around 40-60%

Reed and Grinnell are difficult to get into as their applicant pool is usually self-selective.
I would suggest Beloit, Denison, Lewis and Clark, St. Olaf…all schools I’ll take a good look at.

I think we must have rather similar taste. We overlap on Oberlin, Macalester, and Carleton (where I will be attending for the class of 2010!!). I applied to the following “safeties”
Allegheny College
Beloit College
Coe College
Earlham College
Goucher College
Kalamazoo College
Knox College
Lawrence University
Lewis & Clark College
University of Minnesota, Morris (a great instate {for me} public LAC)

Take a look at this website: http://www.ctcl.com/

Dickinson and Muhlenberg.

bobbobbob: having reed, grinnell and whitman as safeties is the smartest idea, why not add middlebury, wesleyan and haverford to the list? they also make great safeties for those considering carleton, oberlin and macalester as reaches.

I’m not sure that Middlebury, Wesleyan, and Haverford are truly safeties for anyone. They are among the schools that turn away brilliant students because they can - their applicant pools are that strong. They may be less selective than Carleton (and Midd certainly is NOT less selective than any of the mentioned schools), but definitely not safeties.

I agree. Middlebury, Haverford, and Wesleyan as safties for those schools, or for that matter any schools sounds a little bizarre. They are all as competitive to get into as Carleton and definitely more so than the others.

people… helloooo?
um collegeprep11 was joking… or that was my take on it at least. harvardford’s acceptance rate this year was 23% and carton, middleberry, and wellesleyan are around there as well or a little more.

p.s. i do agree however that the honor code is cool

wok the line: thank you. seems like people don’t take sarcasm too well around here  my point was that how could you possibly consider grinnell as a safety when it is as competitive, if not more so, than oberlin and macalester. reed and whitman may not be as competitive but certainly no safeties for those applying to macalester and oberlin as reaches.

good safeties;
denison
earlham
wooster
pitzer
willamette

Thanks everyone!! I’ll definitely look into these suggestions, if I haven’t already. And, collegeprep11, before I realized you were joking, I was thinking, wow, this person really thinks I’m a genius if Haverford is my safety!!!

Bard, Occidental

brown:
If you are looking for a great LAC with a LOVELY campus in a cute little town look at Denison. Of all the schools mentioned in this thread I think it is also the most generous (by far) with merit scholarship money, if that is an issue for your family.

Here is a link to some info about it:

Good luck. Sounds like you’re doing some good research. Don’t forget to think about cost too though.

Union, Skidmore, Hobart, St. Lawrence, Gettysburg

rhodes college is cool and easier to get into.

My eldest graduated from Macalester and she had great experience there. My present HS graduate will be going to Knox college. I would recommend you to visit many of those above named schools because they are full of character and each of them has something special to recommend. I do not think that Macalester gives better education than Knox or Lawrence - they are more similar than different. Mac is little higher on the ranking list but what does it mean?
Enjoy your road.

lindalana was right, macalester doesn’t give better education than knox. macalester is not known for its rigor academics, it ranks high on the usnews ranking mainly because of its location. (i’m not saying it is not a good school here). but carleton vs. knox is a whole different story.
