Safety at SUNY Potsdam?

Parents of students at SUNY Potsdam… do you feel safe sending your student there? Was considering having ours apply there until I accidentally came across numerous videos/articles about a student being murdered right outside the campus. Any opinions or experiences greatly appreciated.

Not a parent of the school and likely isn’t one. Just curious - is this the shotting back a few years ago or recent?

This type of wackadoo can be anywhere in our society. I don’t know if the area is safe or not - St. Lawrence is there too - but this wouldn’t preclude me from sending a student. It’s quite tragic though. But it’s a lone psycho.

Motive revealed as Snow is sentenced for murdering SUNY Potsdam student

Potsdam is listed as one of the 200 safest (#177) small towns in the United Stares.

EDIT: just realized you were questioning the future. Sorry that I missed that. Still I leave this just in case it helps someone else.

I hope that someone can give you the details that you need to understand the safety of the school. Still, over years of following this site, I have noted the pattern below. You may be ahead of the curve:

March Madness - waiting for results

April Angst - deciding on the final school

May Buyer’s Remorse - did you pick the wrong school?!

June/July - Happy half the time and scared the remainder (bc you will find a crime or even a crime spree! in the area where your kid will go to school). I had wondered if my kid’s roommate could be a serial killer…until I realized that was ridiculous…they were probably just a drug dealer. Your mind can go to crazy places if you are a tad anxious.

August Poverty - tuition is coming due and you spent too much money on “stuff” for their room.

Hang on for the ride. Your question is serious. Still it’s also normal to search and wonder…and find something. I got to walk around my D’s orientation seeing a picture in every window of a poor girl that had gone missing in the spring. Broke my heart. But my D went to college and was safe.
