Could someone suggest a few decent US colleges where I’ll be sure of getting in? My SAT scores are:
SAT I: 2000 (planning to retake on Dec 4, 2009)
SAT II: 2370

My interests are math and chess.

An SAT of 2000 is above the 90th percentile. There are about 1,500 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., and you should be safe at at least 1,300 of them.

You need to tell us a bit more about yourself. What are the reaches and matches you liked? UMBC and UT Dallas (?) one of the UTs are big on chess and have scholarships for chess players. Do you have financial constraints or concerns? Regional? A lot of kids here use their local schools that they well know as safeties. They know the schools, know they can get into them.

No financial constraints, not applying for aid anywhere.

I liked UT Dallas though I’m worried it’ll turn me into a chess player rather than a mathematician. Also, is admission to UT Dallas guaranteed with my scores?

Thanks.

I’d also like to add that I’m applying during my second gap year. Also, I’m an international (Indian).

It may be a stretch to say that UTD and UMBC have scholarships for chess-playing students. I think it’s more the case that they find international grand masters without college degrees and pay them to come to their campuses and nominally become students so that they can dominate at chess. If you’re looking at either program, you’d want to be sure that it’s chess program is truly open to non-recruited students. Freshmen who show up at Southern Cal thinking it’d be fun to go out for the football team would find a similar impediment.

I recommend Case Western Reserve University and RPI as good math schools for you, very good schools where you can be sure of being admitted. (The RPI Chess Club web site appears to be up to date.)

i need more info, what’s your GPA? what high school do you go to…etc…

and break up your SAT scores into subsections plz!

Did you visit UT Dallas? This is not a school I recommend for quality of student life.

My GPA is 4, 4, 3.8 in my final 3 years.

SAT I: CR-600, M-790, W-610
SAT II: Math2-800, Phy-770, Chem-800
